Rheumatoid Arthritis

Folks . . .

I'm a 33 year old female with rheumatoid arthritis in my knees. I've just gone back to the gym after a significant hiatus. My arthritis makes exercises like squats and leg presses difficult.

What is the best way to handle this? Should I just limit the motion to the range that causes no discomfort? Are there any alternatives?

My doctor has not been helpful, and any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I personally wouldn't do it, depending on severity. I'd get the knees replaced, if it's really bad.

But...what you said indicates that you have done squats in the past. Perhaps you just need to get your connective tissue back on track by taking it easier for now.

I'm not a professional and I don't have RA so I wouldn't know...just taking shots at the dark.

Unfortunately, at 33 I’m far too young to have my knees replaced (using procedures available here in Canada). The lifespan of the artificial joint would be much shorter than my projected remaining lifespan.

Yes . . . I’ve done squats in the past: many, many squats. I just can’t get used to the idea of not doing them. My goals are very different now, though, so perhaps I don’t need to dwell on them as much as I am.

I would check with a Physical Therapist who has dealt with people with RA before. You definitely have health considerations that many others don't have, and while exercise can help, it can also make it worse if not done properly. I would imagine a PT would be able to guide you in the right direction.

I don't recommend asking a personal trainer, b/c most are not going to be authorized for that.
