Reward Yourself!!

With alot of members motivation going downhill, I thought we could start a thread on celebrating the "little" accomplishments.

I think we need to reward ourselves for every 5 pds we loose. Here are some ideas...feel free to add to it!

buy a new bottle of nail polish
go to the movies
Maybe buy some pretty underware :p
buy a new book
take the day off of housework
bath salts,bubble bath

After 10 pds..
Get a new shirt
Haircut
Get a manicure

Also, you can reward yourself w/ $1 everyday you stay on your diet!

I love this idea!!! I actually talked about this with my fiance' last night. When I get to 180lbs I'm going to get my nails done and when I get to 160lbs I'm going to start tanning :) Somewhere in between there I'll need new panties....mine are getting a little big...hehe!!!

LoL...they will girl! keep it up!

I'm at 182 now...when I get to 179, I'm going to celebrate w/ a new bottle of nail polish. I know its only 3 pds, but its a place I havn't been at in YEARS

underware? is that anything like hardware? :D

congrats korrie, are ya getting the sparkly kind? i love sparkly polish.

hmm thats an idea... maybe i should find something that ive wanted to get now for a while and tell myself im only allowed to buy it if such and such..

great idea! Thanks for this. :D

This is an excellent idea. I had a friend who was doing this, and her rewards were new shoes or clothing for her goals! Her husband worked out a rewards system with her and she'd get to buy something for every like 5lbs she lst. This worked really well for her because she was a total shoe and clothes lover!! (like a lot of women. hehe)

So.. here are some of my rewards
First 5lbs, I bought a new pair of shoes and jeans, desperately needed!

I think a real key here is finding something that you would really enjoy having or appreciate doing for yourself. Perhaps something you haven't done in a really long time and then rewarding yourself with that. :) Also. posting pictures up of what your "starting weight" is at your house is another good motivator. This way you can have a reminder of just how far you have come and where your still getting to! :D

Some other reward ideas:
New work out clothes
New work out dvd
new work out accessories (i.e. I Just bought a new water bottle!! which I'm excited about..what a nerd!)
new pair of tennis shoes
flowers for yourself

Another note.. most of you probably know this, but to state the obvious, just do not reward yourself with food. As it is our whole goal to teach ourselves that food is not our gratification. Its fuel to keep our bodies going and that's about it. (At least its how I need to remind myself)

Secondly.. for motivation, practice some "positive self talk". Make a goal every day to say one positive thing about your progress, your success, and your goals. :) Whether it be work, your dieting, your exercise, whatever.. :) Mine for the day is: Even though I desperately do not want to exercise anymore this week, I got up this morning and still hit the gym. I will be exercising tonight. Yay for me! :)

Hope.. my lil tid bits help someone!!

NL, you have some good ideas. But, you know, when reading your post about food being only for substance and not a reward... This is maybe where we need to strive to achieve, but I think for me food will always be a reward. For example, if I have not had icecream in a month and I was so good and I lost 5 lbs, having a bit of icecream is exactly what I want, even more then a pair of jeans or new clothes. Or rewarding myself with an outing to a nice restaurant with wonderful food. I love to enjoy food purely for its taste! That's probably why I gained so much weight to begin with, but that is something I could never change about myself. I will always enjoy the taste of food, and especially rich foods, and I will enjoy how food makes me feel. I cannot imagine my life without that. However, the change I'm willing to make for a lifetime is the amount of those foods and frequency. To me it is really about learning when to stop and when to say no. I get so cought up in the moment of enjoying food, that I forget I'm supposed to stop. Learning appropriate portions really helps.

Sorry for ramblings, just wanted to share another point of view...

Once I reach my goal (-40 lbs) I get a cat! :) I've wanted one for a really long time. My husband agreed for this as motivation to lose.

My rewards for smaller increments are things like:
cat dish
litter box

Plus there will be some like:
perfume
new make up
haircut (haven't been to a salon in ages..... been cutting my own hair).

:) I want my cat!

when I get to my goal weight, I am getting lots of new clothes!! and this week when I lost 5 lbs I bought a new purse!!

actually, when i reach the 170s i plan on buying a whole new exercise wardrobe! mine is rather worn in and faded, so i'm thinking it will be appropriate. when i reach the 160s i think i'll buy myself a whole new wardrobe!

. . . .we'll see about that, but anyway. . .;)

Tamschro, I can relate! :)
I told my husband that when I reach my total weight goal I want a horse! Having a horse is a life-long dream, so that would be ULTIMATE motivation for me! Unfortunately, he was kind of hesitant about that as a horse is a big financial commitment...

NothinToLose - a horse... awesome. I can understand his hesitancy. My DH doesn't really want a cat... but knows how much I do want one.

To reward or not to reward that is the question???

Okay, is it a bad thing to reward yourself? I am not talking about bengin and eating 20 bags of chips. I mean, if you do really good all week, is it okay to reward yourself with something that you don't want to have to worry about the calories, something that your craving. OR, do you think this would seriously set you back? Interested to know what everyone's opinion is. Thanks!

I sometimes let myself have something im craving, as long as its still under my calorie limit, so it may mean being even stricter than usual throughout the day!! (though I have been REALLY bad today and am not feeling like im in any position to give advice at the mo-see my diary!!)

I guess its better to reward yourself with non-food things though, eg "i lost 3lbs this week so im gonna buy some oh-so-gorgous new shoes" hee hee!!

I don't think in terms of rewards. Especially when it comes to food.

I look at my weekly calories which should range from 9800 to 11900 calories a week and see where I'm at - I average around 8400-8700 a week. If I'm out somewhere and eat more artichoke dip then I planned for, or want some of the cheesecake my husband and daughter brought home, or decide to go out for an unplanned dinner, I know that even if I splurge by 2000 calories, I'm still under for the week.

Generally, I simply try and keep my calories in my daily range.

I try and not look at it in terms of "I've been good" so I "deserve" this cheesecake (which implies that the cheesecake is bad). Food is not either good or bad to me - it is what it is. Sometimes it fits into my life/daily/weekly calories and sometimes it doesn't. It definitely is not a reward.

But then, I don't "reward" myself. I get pedicures, buy clothes, shoes, get my hair done, etc. when I need to.

Living life well is its own reward :D
