replacement for DL

I know I know, DL is the best compound lift, but a friend of mine's got a bad back and his doctor told him with a capital N-O that he should not do them. What would be a decent replacement for deadlifts if he cant do them?

If he has a bad back he shouldnt be doing any lifting untill it is better. he should be putting all his effort in to healing, with the right food, rest, treatments and light exercise such as yoga.

im not sure the exact diagnosis, or what its called, but I'm not sure healing is the answer. He used to be a tree climber/ trimmer but the doc told him if he keeps the same career, he will damage his back beyond repair. He's quit his job and gone back to school. I think this is a permanent thing

if some1 has a back problem that effects there jobs, the chances are it will effect there lifestyle and training.
his back needs to be in good shape to do any heavy weight training. If his back never gets in to good shape than he should never deadlift.
if he wants to build up the strength he should see a sports theripist

well, if the doctor disagrees that he cannot do DLs, den probably he not do them.

he should try strengtening his back? like the upp and downs , with hands across chest.

there';s a fari chance that something is weaker than the back which has caused this in the first place...i wood advise him to go and get a full postural assessent and start from scratch...don't avoid the pain, find out why it's there

Doing roman chair exercises are a really good thing to develope a stronger mid-section in general. Most of the time, pain in your back is also an indication that your whole "core" needs some work.
