Reason #219 To Avoid Drinking Soda...

(CNN) -- It fizzes. It quenches. And it could also contain fecal bacteria.

Nearly half of the 90 beverages from soda fountain machines in one area in Virginia tested positive for coliform bacteria -- which could indicate possible fecal contamination, according to a study published in the January issue of International Journal of Food Microbiology.

THE WHOLE ARTICLE FROM CNN

I don't know what's worse:

The fact that I actually drink that crap (pun 100% intended) or the fact that I LIKE it...:puke:

They actually had a new episode a week or two ago on MythBusters about this. It turned out that your soda cans are as clean as anything else you've got! (Especially your kitchen sponge. Holy cow is that thing infested with bacteria and germs!) The episode is called "Hidden Nasties" and it might be on their website (I'm not sure if they post up full episodes or not).

Yuck! I remember seeing a similar sting on the ice that is in those soda dispensers, and that in one study they found over half of the ice was contaminated with fecal matter from employees not washing their hands.

A good reminder, makes you wonder why you always feel like dookie after eating fast food. You are what you eat. lol

Are you sure you like it though? That sounds a bit silly put like that, but sometimes we become creatures of habit, and might continue certain behaviours on account of the fact we've done them millions of times before. As humans we seem to find comfort in familiarity, I think, and may explain why even though you might think you like something, it might be more a case of you've become used to doing it.

That sounds revolting about the level of bacteria found in soda cans, although I can't say I'm surprised really. Think about all of the chemicals in soda anyway, surely they themselves would be reproducing (maybe even duplicating) any bacteria already in the cans? I used to drink soda quite a bit, but I know how it makes me feel when I do (the blood sugar level tight-rope you find yourself waivering on...) and I know how rubbish it makes me feel so now I don't.

To be honest? I don't think of that stuff..if I did I would never eat, drink, travel, do anything public, never go shopping, never use a bathroom that isn't wrapped in plastic, never breath, never swim, never do anything again in my entire life :)

i was just thinking about this.. what if you get water from the fountain instead of soda? do you still have a risk of getting the bacteria?

I don't drink any kind of commercial juice. Even the fresh squeezed orange juice is not (blog link removed) Cans of soda...I'm not even going to mention those...

OK... I'll bite.
And what exactly does this Bacteria do that is harmful to the body?

Been on soda since the 50's.

If I quit Soda (Diet of Course) what will I notice that not getting all that Bacteria has done for me?

I have not even had a common cold in over 2 years now. (probably shouldn't have bragged - waaaaay over-due)

I have always been, shall we say Healthy as a Horse. Of course that is usually when ever I am as "Heavy As A Horse." LOL

It seemed like every time I got my weight down to my goal or close to it... I started getting a cold once a year.

Perhaps that Bacteria only effects Thinner People?

Thanks ahead of time, if I should get a reply. Good Luck to All. Rev. TJ

Wow, time to think back to my sanitation class :willy_nilly:...

The main concern from this story is that the fecal matter being found on these machines/in the soda itself can contain what are called "coliform bacteria". Coliform bacteria is just a form of bacteria that lives inside the intestinal tracts of both humans and animals alike. Obviously, when an animal (or person) takes a shit and that shit gets onto or into your food somehow (mostly through improper and unsanitary fertilization), the bacteria that is contained within their bowels will transfer onto whatever it is that you're eating. Certain bacteria can be killed - extreme heat, extreme cold, chemicals, etc - but some bacteria are nearly indestructible at times and can live inside of the foods that we humans eat.

One of the names you are probably familiar with is E. coli. In respect to this soda fountain story, that is the most feared outcome from having such unsanitary conditions. E. coli is a powerful bacteria that is found within the lower intestine of animals, including humans. Basically, E. coli attaches itself to a host, breeds like crazy and causes it's host to become violently ill.

These bacteria, when living inside of you, can cause you to have severe stomach cramping and abdominal pains, frequent and often bloody diarrhea, fits of nausea, uncontrollable vomitting and an extremely high fever. Just imagine having food poisoning, only multiply the feeling by 1,000.

Your weight has absolutely nothing to do with the ability to attract this bacteria into your system. Coliform bacteria doesn't discriminate against a person's weight. Whether you are 100, 200 or 300 lbs, coliform bacteria would love to make home inside of your intestines. Now, on the other hand, a person's age may give them the upper hand when battling against coliform bacteria. Children are more likely than adults to contract the bacteria.

And, if you quit drinking soda, it's not going to prevent you from ever ingesting these bacteria. Bacteria is found eeeeeverywhere, not just in soda or the fountains that disperse it. Coliform bacteria can be found in beef, beef products and anything that is farmed - vegetables, fruits, etc.

FYI - How can something that lives inside of an animal's intestines be found in fruits and vegetables?

The bacteria originates within the intestines of beef. Pretty much all farmers use the feces of their cattle to aid in the fertilization of their crops. If a cow (for example) is infected with E. coli and it's feces is used as fertilizer, it's infected feces is literally being sprayed all over the fruits, vegetables and other crops that the farmer may be growing. And, if those crops aren't properly washed and/or handled in a sanitary manner throughout the entire process of packing, shipping and receiving, than the crops will contain traces of bacteria. So, if your food isn't handled properly, you could literally be eating animal shit. Mmm...

I think it depends on your resistance to bacterias...Maybe that's the reason why you are not affected by it. What do you think?

I have to agree. The human body is exposed to a tremedous amount of bacerials and such on a daily basis (dollar bills for example) ..thats why you have an immune system.

I used to work in a liquor store, and after realizing that most beer cans end up getting stepped on with dirty shoes at some point (loading and unloading pallets requires some climbing), I concluded that drinking straight from any can is a bad idea. Bacteria isn't limited to soda cans. On the other hand, said bacteria is absolutely everywhere and I've never heard of someone becoming deathly ill after drinking from a dirty can....I guess it's more of the "ick" factor than anything.

I would just add that simply breathing will net you a healthy amount of fecal goodstuff(tm) every single day. It is even moderately healthy under some circumstances, namely after a antibiotics treatment since that tends to mess with your erhm... intestinal ecosystem... one could say. And just to head it off at the pass, no, probiotics will actually not do you much good, no matter what they say on the television :)

edit: to clarify, my main point was the breathing of fecal matter, I was not claiming that E. Coli is healthy :p
