hi:) im a newbie.

well i am 21 years old, 5'2 and 150 pounds. i was about 110, up until 2 years ago, so this weight gain, is really hurting my self-esteem. i am east indian-and it is common for parents to want their daughters, or their daughter in laws to be "fair, tall, slim" . my parents keeptelling me, that i wont get married if i keep being overweight. it doesnt help that i am very tan, and short. anyways i try to ignore them, because it is just backward thinking.

but it is really affecting my social life! i broke up with my bf of 2 years, because of other reasons-but i know secretly, he wasnt attracted. actually that wasnt a secret, he made that clear. and i thin if he had been attracted physically as well, mayb ehe would have tried harder. anyways who needs him.

i also avoid meeting with a lot of my friends, it doesnt help that ebyerone in my area, and east indian, is very tall, and fair, and skinny.

anyways... i am a vegetarian. i have heard people have success with the herba life and slimfast diet plans. i dotn really want to adapt to a diet per se-incase the weight spirals back on later.

this is what i am planning oin doing..

protein shake for breakfast

(120 cals, 24 g of protein:) ) (ps-these shakes r cheaaaaaaaper than slim fast and herba life, and way more protein, les fat, they are at gnc) ppl actually use them to add on more meals to gain weight, ijust use it as a mini meal replacement.

anyways so

protein shake for breakfast
snack
protein shake for lunch
snack
2 chapatis, stirfried vegetables , salad for dinner

the snacks can only be a bowl of either..
fruit, vegetables, tofu, garbanzo beans, soup

i am not going to avoid my cravings, just decrease the amount. i always always crave chocolate-so if i want thocolate, im just going to have 2 cookies, rather than a huge slice of cake.
also, if i am eating 2 protein shakes, and having alot of fruits and vegetables, if i want my dinner to be a little more fun, say pizza every blue moon-i will have it.

in terms of exercise, i haev tried taebo for the last year-and didnt lose one pound:(.

i am going to buy an elliptical, and do that for about an hour daily. hopefully i will see results :)

i dont want to lose weight too fast, because it will pile on right after.

i am planning o just trying to eat this meal plan (alot of protein from the shakes and tofu), a lot of carbs from the fruit/ indian food, low fat.
+ 1 hour of elliptical.
ihope i lose atleast a pound/week. im not plannin on it though, my metabolism is incredibly slow.

i heard there is osmething called benefiber, where you can add fiber to any food. im thinking of doing that, to regulate my digestive system, and to fill up faster.

anyways goodluck everyone

open to suggestions n critique on my plan

Hey, im so sorry to hear about the pressures your family is putting on you. It sounds like you have the right thinking though with realizing that their way of thinking is backward. If your boyfriend really did care about your gaining weight after yall had been dating for 2 years, then he wasn't worth it.

Having said that, you have a good start of an idea for your diet. Remember, though, you need to figure something out that you can keep doing for the rest of your life, otherwise the weight will just come back as soon as you stop your "diet". The protein shake might be alright for one meal a day, though a lot of people on here would probably not suggest replacing a whole meal with a shake. I eat a Zone bar for breakfast because its fast, easy, and keeps me full. I am a vegetarian too. You might want to look into getting the book "Eat to Live" by Joel Fuhrman. It competely changed my views on eating. It really focuses on nutrition. It is not strictly a vegetarian book, but it definitely endorses vegetarianism and has great information.

The thing you need to remember is that weight loss is all about having an energy deficit. When you take in fewer calories than you expend, your body will have to use stored energy (i.e.fat) to function. So, the simplest way to lose weight (in my opinion) is to count calories. You will lose most of your weight by changing your diet, not exercise. Exercise is important though because it does burn calories and it increases your metabolism. If you dont like TaeBo, then find something that you do like and you think you can do consistently. You also may want to read more about HIIT. There is a post on that I think in the harsh truth section or the club section (it should be towards the top). Weight training is also important because as your body is in a caloric deficit and is searching for stored energy, it can also start to eat away at your muscle. By doing weight training (with some pretty hefty weights, not the little girl ones :p ) you are keeping your muscles active which will keep your body from burning them because it thinks you are in need of them (I think I explained that right lol, you might want to go to Steve's journal to get more info on that).

lol well thats a lot of information for one post. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, you will learn a lot on this forum. You should also start a journal in the journal section so that you can keep track of your food and exercise and also get to know some other members of this forum.

Welcome to the forum! It's frustrating when parents (and boyfriends) put pressure on you to be, look, or act a certain way. Hopefully you can find the support to get your to your weight loss goals here. Good luck!

What am I doing wrong?

I was wondering if anyone can point be in the right direction. I am trying to understand the best Precor 576i workout to lose weight. I'm 55 and 235lbs and 6'1". My resting pulse is 65. I have been working out for 5 months 5 times a week. Ramp at 11 and resistence at 2 usually averaging 5400 to 5900 reps per session. My heartbeat averages about 127-132 for 20 of the 30 minute session. I've lost some inches but very little weight. Do you know the best program I can do to shed weight or is there a site you recomend. Thank you for any info you can supply.
