? re weight resistance training

oops I just posted on mind and body, I think maybe this is where I should have posted my ?s.Sorry, I'm new. I was interested in knowing if weight-resistance training works to lose weigh and tone up. I'm in my early 50's about 20# overweight and have sciatica. I used to take an aerobics class 3-4xs per week, but it agrivated my sciatica so much I had to quit and of course I gained 20#. I have been told that weight resistance may be good for my back to build up muscle and that it actually will help me lose weight faster then aerobics. Can this be true???
Next problem is that I can go to the gym only on M,T,& W + some F.I was told you can only do weight resistance every other day? Why is this, if I'm not overdoing it I should have no problem going on consecutive days.
Any help will be great. Thanks

Yes, weight training is good because it builds muscle mass which burns calories when you're just sitting around! It will also help you firm up your body which is always a good thing. Congratulations on trying it out :) I've been trying to get my mom (she's 55) into the gym for years!!

Anyway, back to the question...as long as you don't do the SAME body part on consecutive days you should be fine. Each body part needs around 48 hours of rest (depending on the individual since everyone's slightly different). Can you buy a few sessions with a personal trainer? That would be my recommendation for starting out.

Good luck...keep us posted!! :)

Weight training sure can help you. You can check out for detailed info. I used to have sciatica too. There are exercises you should stay away from.

For me, anything that required me to bend forward from the hips and lift something was a no-no. Good luck to you!
