Random Workout Routines

Good Afternoon.

I just came up with a great idea that I'd love to see
on many fitness sites. I think random workouts should
become a trend.

I put up a prototype here:

For now, I just used the exercise ball, bodyweight, and elastic band
exercises from Shapefit.com so that I can give people an idea of what
I'm thinking. From reading many articles, it seems that a common
mistake is to do the SAME exercises over and over every week. After
a while, your muscles get used to the exercises and you don't get
as much out of the workout as before.

So here's my solution:

I organized each exercise by body part. For each body part,
the computer picks a random exercise. You have a random exercise
for nearly all the major parts of your body. This prevents people
from doing the same exercise over and over and, at the same
time, gives them a complete workout.

And it also guarantees that your body will never know what to expect,
since your workout is completely random every day. And so you'll rarely
do the same set of exercises 2 days in a row. Different exercises will
stress different muscles, but in the long run, it all evens out since each
exercise has an equal chance of happening.

In addition, you could have a slideshow view(instead of using tables). So
that after each exercise you click a button(or hit a key) and it moves
to the next exercise.

Lastly, you'll NEVER have to micromanage your exercise routines
ever again. And if you're not near a computer(or don't have a
computer), you can also use a deck of cards to do the same thing.

In short, this system is:
1)Comprehensive, since it can cover all the major groups.

2)Balanced, since its comprehensive and each exercise
(within each muscle group) has an equal chance of occuring.

3)Unpredictable, since it different day to day and so your
muscles will never get used to your routine. So you would
continually "shock" your muscles.

The real challenge is choosing a good mix of exercises for each
muscle group so that you hit all parts of the muscles at different
angles.

I agree - I try to look at everything as a form of exercise. When I get to the metro escalators, I walk up them instead of ride them. If I can walk instead of take the bus to work, I do. If I can carry my groceries home, instead of drive them, I will. I think that in addition to changing the routine at the gym, it is important to actively think of ways to integrate work outs into your daily schedule.
 
To the OP what were the results achieved with this method? The exercise ball, bodyweight, and elastic band is not enough for many of us who hit gyms with modern equipment.

I came up with a similar idea sometime early 2006. I put up a page, and I recently updated it at

(I say "similar", because any random workout method should also have the *option* of not being completely random, given injuries, soreness, doctor or personal trainer recommendations, personal preferences, etc.)

I just want to assure everyone that my posting is definitely NOT spam.

I would like to hear any other suggestions that people might have.

Some features I've been looking to add include:

*removing exercises you don't like
*categorized routines(bodyweight,freeweights,cardio,resistance band,bench presses,etc)

*changing the order of the muscle groups (i.e. to fit your workout order)

.....and many others.

I purposely didn't include any exercises requiring specific workout machines or expensive gym equipment. I was looking to make a portable workout that you can do almost anywhere. But rest assured, I will include all types of workout eventually.
