Quitting smoking

Hello everyone!

So, I am quitting smoking....Yay! I have decided it would be crazy to take on a lifestyle change and continue smoking my life away. I have quit in the past, not easy but I did it....now this is the big one.

I have been easing into Cardio and someminor lifting but I was able to get through it even as a smoker. I am terrified to gain anymore weight, I've already put on 30lbs in 3 years....so I have come up with a solution.....

Shaun T's Insanity, from the looks of it there is NO WAY I could continue to smoke and even attempt this workout. Now, I know it's a little extreme but I have to try. I want to trick my metabolism.

So, with all this said....Have any of you quit smoking and lost weight in the same year? I know it's difficult but it can't be impossible right??? Please share your experiences with me. I really need to hear some positive stuff to keep me going.

Congratulations on making some hard decisions to be healthier. I actually did quit smoking and lost weight in the same year - 40 lbs. Like you it was the not my first attempt at quitting, but I did it - that was 3 years ago. I kept the weight off over a year and then gained it all back plus some, but I cannot blame it on the fact that I stopped smoking, I just went back to my old eating habits. Looking back I think that I let the success I had in one area feed the desire to succeed in the other. I wish I had the determination now that I had then - ha ha!!! I know that you can do it - it's amazing what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it. Coming here for encouragement and support will help alot - there are some really knowledgeable people here who will help you and cheer you on.

I quit smoking a year ago (after 12 years!!!!!!) and began a healthy eating and fitness routine at the same time - ha ha talk about fun times!!

At first it was difficult but I did lose some weight, not as much as I would like but I think maybe the body has to "reset" itself after so long of doing such damage to it. And after all the horror stories of weight gain I was grateful for that...

I take encouragement from the fact that the scales are at least going the right way, BUT the biggest thing that has motivated me to keep going was trying new workout routines and setting goals for them, for example I couldnt do push ups or run 5 miles, now I can do both and it has been such a motivator to be feeling stronger and fitter. I reassess goals every 4 weeks or so and set new ones to keep me interested

Oh ! Forgot to say - you will be so surprised at just how much cardio and weight work you can do when your lungs are back up to a decent capacity!! I too used to "get through" workout classes being a smoker but since I quit I can do so much more!!!!

Congrats to you! I have been smoking for over 15 years so I know where you're coming from. I figure I have to trade one addiction for another...at least fitness is a good addiction.

I agree about the "reset" deal....my body will probably go into shock lol. I just want to feel better, I want to want to workout.

I can't do a pushup or run....I for sure have some goals set up for myself. I'm just glad to know that there are others out there that have jumped similar hurdels.

I quit about 6 weeks ago and have luckily only gained a few lbs. I do struggle from time to time though.

Congrats to you! I figure if I'm burning a 1000 calories a day and doing everything to keep my metabolisim reved I think I should be ok. Keep up the good work!
 
Hi there

I quit smoking about 18 months ago, and immediately started exercising seriously for the 1st time in my life!! With a greater lung capacity its a lot easier, and also I find that the exhiliration of exercise certainly keeps your mind off the evil weed!!!
Around January this year, I started smoking again, and immediately stopped going to the gym, I smoked for 2 months and was super miserable.. Then I stopped again, started working out again, and was back to feeling amazing straight away :D So with me, its definitely the case that I directly associate smoking with exercise, ie when I don't smoke I workout 4/5 times a week and feel great, when I smoke I feel like sh*t.

So yeh my advice is throw yourself full on into exercising and you'll be disappointed you were ever a smoker / non-exerciser, it certainly worked for me :)
