New to the forums, I'm a 19 male in BC Canada. Recently I joined the gym to try and gain some muscle mass. I'm 6'1 and weigh 145-150, depends on the time of the day. I can lift my own body weight on the bench, so I'm in relatively good shape. On average I can run about 6 miles in 45 minutes, so I consider myself in decent cardiovascular shape as well, but I still can't get rid of flab around certain area's(stomach, glutes).
At the gym I attend, my trainer basically said I need to eat more regularly to boost my metabolism to try and burn the flab. He also said that the cardio I was doing, long endurance runs might not be beneficial for losing the flab, and that weight training actually is a lot better for getting rid of this kinda stuff, with of course some cardio warmups here and there.
I come from a very Russian family, so lets say the drink of choice around the house isn't OJ or apple juice. Drinking around the house is a very, very common thing. I basically have a bunch of questions regarding this, so if someone with any insight could enlighten me would be I would be incredibly thankful. For the sake of this thread, I'll try and start of by listing a couple questions.
1. Does drinking prevent muscle growth?
2. Is drinking post-workout when trying to gain strength/mass destroy muscle(i read a couple of articles regarding this)
3. Is my trainer right about the cardio? He says I'm only dehydrating myself by doing this, and actually depressing my metabolism.
4. Is it possible to get a six pack or close to if I drink?
5. Does alcohol greatly decrease testosterone and increase cortisol levels?
6. My instructor says that drinking alcohol after a workout will only cause me to get drunk faster, and won't have any negative effects on my muscle growth etc.
I think there will be more as they come to me, but this is all off the top of my head for now. I'm going to Miami in the winter, and want to actually look good in a bathing suit, not with skinny limbs and flabby abs.
These were the articles I looked at:
-(not sure why this says possible error, but if not accessible, just type "does alcohol make you fat" into google and its the first link)
I'm aware of the health effects of alcohol, but otherwise I keep a fairly healthy lifestyle, I avoid bad carbs, sugar, fatty foods etc. I've only been attending the gym for about 2 weeks, maybe 9 or 10 of the 14 days, and I'm not sure how fast I should see results.
Any input is appreciated, thanks!
