Question on whether I should use protein shakes?

Hey.
Now for me there are 2 types of bodies, the athletic body type, and the more bulky bodybuilder like body.

Now I weigh around 86 kg, maybe a bit more atm, and my BMI is slightly overweight.
I don't honestly care about my BMI or weight, just how I look.

I also don't really care if my body is athletic or the other bulky type, actually maybe more the bulky type.. anyway.

My question is, I just want my body to be not so fat and wobbly :p
So, should I rather just force myself to do more cycling at the gym to lose weight, or should I just go with my normal training cycle, warm up and do my training, and afterwards drink my protein shake.

So theres no real "lose weight" part in my training.

I'm just afraid that if I start using protein shakes, I won't lose any fat or something, what do you think?
 
Well, would you suggest to start using protein shakes and just continue using my old training cycle.

I would basically just turn the fat into muscle, instead of burning the fat away.
Will this work?
So basically, should a slightly overweight person drink proteinshakes to gain muscle, but lose fat.
 
I have absolutely no idea what it is you do when you go to the gym. So I have no way of telling you if what you're doing is good or not. What does your typical diet look like? How much protein are you getting currently? How many carbs and what kind of carbs are you eating right now?

A protein shake can be a great way to get more protein if not getting enough or to take place of a meal if you need to cut out some calories.

I would go over to and click on the articles link and read up on all of Lyle's nutritional articles. This will give you an understanding of how to structure your eating for your goals.

And if you want to really kick start some activity, go take a look at (they have a site that has scaled workouts of the workout of the day (WOD) ). Throw in some actual strength training ala and you should be golden.
 
Considering you say you 'old cycle' suggests to me you have been doing the same old things in the gym- You should change your routine every 2-3 months.
With regards to losing fat... calories in versus calories out simple.

Having protein shakes can help you keep you protein intake high while your cutting your calorie intake so yes take them. Just make sure you loook at whats going in compared with how much you burning

Sorry, evolutionx, but this is dead wrong. Your BMR is the amount of calories your body requires with NO activity, i.e. in a coma. You should NEVER eat below this amount, unless you want to cannibalize muscle tissue and screw up your metabolism.

You won't lose weight unless you create a calorie DEFICIT, and this is a very different thing. The Harris Benedict Equation provides a multiplier, based on your level of activity, that you can use WITH your BMR to determine how many calories you would consume to MAINTAIN your current weight. To lose weight, THAT'S the number you want to eat below.

Okay. I stand corrected. However, a google search of calculating BMR led to all of them on the first page talk about BMR the start of figuring out calorie needs then went on to figure in daily activity and etc. If not, it gave a link to the Harrison-Benedict formula.

Aside from that, when he starts reading Lyle's articles, he'll more than elaborately go into this.
