Question about toning up

I am currently on southbeach diet for a week to shed some fat, but I dont want to lose any muscle mass/strength.

What can I do to prevent losing strength while my caloric intake is much lower?

First, how low is "lower?" Cut cals by too large a number and you will certainly lose muscle.

Assuming your cals are in check, 2 things I recommend are upping you protein intake a bit and altering your weight lifting program.

The extra aminos in the blood will obviously help with muscle maintenance, as your body will turn to this before the muscle.

The alterations I would make to the program, with no knowledge of what you were doing before, would be to reduce volume and go heavier. Think 3x5.

Here's my diet so far.

Morning(6:50am): 2 raw eggs, multi-vitamin,

Snack(9:00am): Cheese string, or cottage cheese.

Lunch(10:45am): Tuna salad, or can of tuna or other meats.

Snack(2:45pm) More cottage cheese usually.

Dinner(5:30pm) Usually some type of meat(chicken, beef,) some veggies.

As for drinks, I really only drink water throughout the day.

Not Much

There really is nothing you can do. Carbs fuel the muscle protein builds them. Why are you on a South Beach diet? With a question like that it sounds like you know what you're doing.

I'd say you need a little more food.

And if you lift heavy weights, lower reps, that'll help you retain muscle mass...but only if you eat more cuz right now you look like yer starving.

Well I wanna shed the fat around my mid section, but I don't want to go back in the gym and find out I can only bench press half of what I used to.
