Question About Time Off...

Hello gentlemen. I am an 18-year-old that has been weight training for about 7 months. I am seeing the gains that I like...and a couple non-changes that I would like to correct.

Anyways, here's my question. I am leaving for a retreat in about 5 weeks, and cannot access a weight room for 6-7 days. The longest I've gone without lifting in the last seven months has been a total span of four days. I would like to know, will I lose serious muscle mass within this frame on 6-7 days? I have a gut feeling that I am over-obsessing, but I would like to check with more knowledgable people than myself. Could I do anything to prevent losing a lot of muscle?

Thanks so much - you guys are the best!

No definitely not, if anything, a week off will help!

You should have already taken a week off in 7 months anyway...I can almost guarantee you that when you get back to it after the week off, you'll be feeling those workouts a lot more. Your body needs a semi-extended period of rest every few months or so.

Take the week off from lifting completely, some cardio is ok, put don't be doing pushes, chair dips, and lunges everyday just cause you would feel weird if you didnt, I know how that goes...but trust me, just take the week off completely.

Thanks a lot AJP - really helpful answer! I was thinkin along your lines, but I didn't know for sure. I'm still sort of a novice to the whole lifting scene...

well then, I have one more quick question, and I apologize if this is seen as stupid. If I decide to take a week off now, and I lift for 3-4 weeks and took another week off, would that be helpful or harmful...harmful in the sense of losing muscle.

Thanks in advance for your answers - I really appreciate it.

Yeah, that would be "ok" technically, but a loose rule of thumb for a week off is usually a few months. However if you took it sooner than a few, especially if your workouts have been really intense, it would be good still...remember rest is when your muscles repair, recover, and grow

in fact, when you get back after that week off, you may find you can actually lift a little more weight!

just try to eat right on that retreat. its weird events like that where RTD shakes and meal bars can be handy. they aren't cheap enough or healthy enough for regular daily use, but when you have no way to sit down to a bowl of rice/chicken/veggies, you do what you gotta do.

Yeah I definitely agree with the guys above. A week off won't hurt you at all. As malkore stated, you'll probably come back stronger. Just try to keep your diet as clean as you can and you'll be raring to go once you get back !!

Take the time off...please, take the time off! I usually take 2 weeks off every 8 weeks. What happens is the muscles become deconditioned to the load you've been subjecting them too. They become desensitised. So when you come back to train, their more sensitive to the weight applied to them. It should mean you grow a little quicker.
