Question About Surgery Verses Exercise

Hello,

I am a 6'1", 300 pound female. I realized that after I lose all this weight, I'll likely have a lot of extra skin. Yeah, I know. Sounds all gross. But, I'm still working on losing it and maintaining exercise 6 days a week.

Now, I've seen people who lose a lot of weight and have to go through a surgical proceedure in order to get rid of the excess skin. I'm going to be honest here. There's no way I can afford to have any kind of cosmetic proceedures. My question is, can a steady exercise scheduel take care of that? Right now, I walk a mile every morning, 6 days a week, with 5 pound weights on each leg. In the evenings, I do an hour of Taebo that's targetted toward total body fat burning. It contains quite a bit of cardio as well. I've also found some nice muscle exercises that I can do at home with what little equipment I currently have. I have 3 pound, 5 pound weights and 5 pound wrist and ankle strap on weights. These seem to target most of my problem areas.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I've also started seriously counting calories. I measure EVERYTHING we eat! Since I've started counting, my calorie intake has been between 1490 - 1710.7. In order to lose one pound per week, I'd need to stay below 2836.7 calories per day. If I want to lose two pounds per week, I'll need to keep it below 2336.7 calories per day. So, I think my daily calorie intake is well within range for getting the weight off within a reasonable amount of time.

One more question. I used the formula given by someone here on these forums. The formula I used was:

-Women: BMR = 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)
-Men: BMR = 66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

I used this formula for my children. I have an 11 year old daughter who weighs 180 pounds and stands 65 inches in height. My son is 9 years old, weighs 90 pounds, and stands 55 inches in height.

Do those formulas work for children as well? Or, should I use a seperate formula?

Thank you for responding. I've upped my calorie intake. Though, to be perfectly honest, I'm having to force myself to eat that many calories while trying to eat healthy at the same time. See, if I wanted to eat unhealthy, the calories are higher and I can eat them without feeling like I'm overeating. If I try and keep it as healthy as possible, I seem to have to eat more. Therefore, it feels as if I'm eating way too much to be trying to lose weight. Does that make sense?

Here's something I've found funny since I've been doing all this. I found that during my 6 day exercise periods, I'm way hungrier than on the day I rest on. Yesterday, I had to force myself to eat all my meals because I just wasn't hungry. :)

I plan to make an appointment with our Health Department Nutritionalist to make sure I have my children's daily calorie intake correct. Thanks again.

Congradulations on making an effort to lose weight. I'm an exericise science major (kinesiology) and I love to hear when people make the valiant attempt to lose weight. i also hate seeing parents just keep feeding their overwieght kids.

About the kids, you need to have a specialized program if your going to have them lose wieght. i focus on adult nutrition and exercise programs so I cannot help you there. Talk to your doctors.

As far as the loose skin is concerned: There is an elasticity to the skin that will help it conform to your new body. if you lose the weight properly (healthy diet and exercise), you shoulnd't have the pounds of skin that gastric patients have.

Sounds like your doing good with your intake. Your staying away from foods with empty calories, and that's why it's tougher to take in that many calories. it goes without saying but, as your weight drops, continue to drop your intake.

Those formulas will be fine for children. The last variable of age works into that.

Good luck and keep us posted. Don't forget to take some 'before' pics so that in a couple of months/years you can show everyone what's possible
