Over the last 8 1/2 months I've lost 99 pounds (as of today..YAY!)Anyway...I've been doing sit ups and weight training all along to try and build muscle while I lose the weight and the sit ups are actually working really well with one major exception! The top and bottom portions of my abs are really tightening up and looking great (compared to what they were before obviously!) but the middle part of my stomach, right where my belly button is and about two inches up and two inches below it, just won't do anything. I do sit ups specifically to target the lower abs and then I do regular crunches for what I thought would help everything else. But is there any different type of sit up that targets just that middle portion perhaps? Or does anyone know what could possibly be the problem to be storing fat just in that one specific area like this? Thank You.

sit ups really do help... just not alone. the only way to get rid if that area of fat is to burn it by eating cleaner and some cardio.

Well I've just been doing a basic low-fat diet that's worked really well so far and as far as cardio, I'm up to 4 miles a day, which may not be that much compared to what some of you guys probably do, but considering I could barely get through 2 miles before, it's great for me. So do you think maybe adding even more cardio would do the trick and just stick with the basic sit ups?

Jilliana, I think you're overdoing it a bit on the running. I wouldn't even touch two miles, much less four miles. You should change over to HIIT for your cardio.

You might also change up the types of trunk movements you do and another thing to take into consideration is that you might be pre-genetically determined to carry a bit more fat in that area.

I agree with those two points. And like metallicarocker said, your diet has to be very clean to get some nice abs. Doing more cardio and more sit-ups isn't going to do a darn thing if your diet isn't right. Post what you regularly eat.

Something else that I hadn't thought of when I was posting earlier (you know, all that beer from the bday), is that women have to get really really lean in order to have a pronounced six-pack. While men can generally have a good looking six-pack at and below 8% bodyfat, women sometimes have to get down to 3-4% bodyfat.

Also, make sure you're getting AT LEAST 25% of your diet from fats, with around 30% being ideal.

Evolution,

You will rarely find a woman with 3-4% body fat (other than a body builder at competition time, IF even that). A % that low would be impossible to maintain year-long. I don't even think you could survive with a BF that low...a woman definitely wouldn't have her period anymore!!! Nah, she can have a good looking set of abs at 12% BF, a good "6-pack" at maybe 8-10%...and the again, it's too much work to maintain a "6-pack" year round...(and by this I mean a very defined, bodybuilder-type 6-pack).
