(Query) Muscle Memory - What is this?

Ok, so i was in a pro wrestling forum today and the discussion broke down to which wrestlers are doing roids. So anyway someone said that Randy Orton could be doing them (google if you don't know who he is) and i said that he probably is because he had a serious (legit - yes pro wrestlers do actually get hurt believe it or not!) injury. Anyway, this shoulder injury required surgery and it put him out for 3 - 4 months and i said that he probably did use roids to bulk up his right shoulder again because when he came back it was back to its normal size and with surgery i can only assume he missed about a months work at least on that shoulder in the gym and thus would've atrophied severly. And here's what another member said.

I don't know if he takes or not, however, there is a phenomenon called muscle memory. Yes it takes alot longer than 3 months to bulk up like he did...the first time. However once a muscle has bulked up, it is much easier for that muscle to get back into shape. The studies out are more focused on weight than shape (ie how long it takes to lift a certain amount) but it also is evident in shape. Sorry to be boring and scientific, but muscle memory has been shown to have effects as long as 15 years later. Any way my 2c

So my question, what is this "muscle memory" thing. Does it even exist? And before you ask, no i don't know the specifics of the surgery...

When you say wrestler do you mean an acctual real wrestler, like an oylimpic wrestler, or an actor wrestler?

muscle memory - In martial arts we use the term muscle memory as a name for the phenomenon that causes us to remember important movments and actions without thinking about them. say someone was to launch a punch, its the muscle memory that moves your body to one side, and counters the attack, as there is no way your brain would have time to think that fast.
like when a boxer moves his head out the way of a punch, its too fast to see and think about, it just happens.

I dont know how it what it could mean in weight trining terms. But it makes sense just on the fact that you know what your doing. you know what diet works for you, you know what exercises to do and how to do them, you know your weights. plus - how do you know he is not taking steriods? you cant tell just buy looking at someone.

Na not olympic wrestling. That's why i stressed the point that it was a legit injury and not a part of any storyline. I didn't say that he is or isn't taking steroids i said that he bulked up rather quickly after surgery which i assume he missed about a month of work on his shoulder which would've caused atrophy. Then that guy said the thing about muscle memory and it didn't add up for me. Thus i asked here, thanks for answering.

if he only had a month off training then you wouldnt even see the diffrence.
he'd be taking all sorts of drugs to stop it.

plus, Ive just had 3weeks off with the flu. I ate nothing but 2-6 slices of toats for 2 weeks and I lost tonnes of weight, but I hardly lost any muscle mass, all my measurments went down by about 3/4 of an inch.

ok, thanks for the info but again i don't know the specifics of the surgery so i don't know for sure how much time he missed.

isent that reflexes?

Anyone who has lifted weights, on and off, for several years is familiar with the concept of "muscle memory". Muscle memory in this context refers to the observation that when a person begins lifting weights after a prolonged lay off, it is much easier to return to their previous levels of size and strength than it was to get there the first time around. Even when significant atrophy (muscle shrinking) has taken place during the layoff, previously hypertrophied muscle returns to its previous size more quickly than usual.

A reflex action is Involuntary, so no its not a reflex.
