PT's: What kind of business do you run?

Ok, I'm going to start a bunch of threads in here that are actually related to the section content. While I'm happy to help people asking generic fitness Q's, this isn't the place for it, and it seems people need a reminder of that fact.

So, PT's, what kind of business do you run?

Outdoor/bootcamp? Mobile? Sub-contractor in a gym? Employed by a gym? Other?

Okay, I'll play ;)

At this point I am employed at two gyms. I have done training on my own at people's homes, and also have been a subcontractor at another facility. In addition to training, I teach several types of group fitness classes.

What was it like training people in their homes? Back when I was doing my Cert IV, one of my lecturers thoroughly scared me off from house calls (at least when it comes to brand new clients/people I haven't met and built trust with) with some rather bothersome stories about his experience in that line of training :S

At least I knew they would always show up ;)

I also have only trained women in their home. I am not sure that I would be as comfortable working with a man in that setting - especially one I did not know!!

One training I did was for a fairly overweight woman. She was not comfortable coming to the gym, and she had a "fitness" area in her house.

I also did a small group at a woman's home - where none of them wanted to get a gym membership. It was a little tight, and we had to improvise a lot, but we made it work.

I definitely can see where there could be some concerns!!!

Not sure if you want my input, as I don't just work as a PT, but... To answer your initial question... I'm all over the place at the moment. In a nutshell, I'm self-employed, but am working a few different types of jobs:

- part time locum (covering a mat-leave) for another kinesiologist,
- sub-contractor for a community-based chronic disease group exercise/education program
- sub-contractor receiving referrals for insurance patients (those in car accidents, work accidents, etc.)
- private personal training at 2 different gyms in town

I have done some home sessions, but only for women, as I wouldn't feel comfortable going into an unknown man's home alone, and only for people that I know or have seen for sessions at a gym before.
