Protiens for weight Loss ??????

Hi Guys....


I need serious advice on the diet front... I am 250 lb and working towards my goal of weight loss. I am burning around 1000 cal in gym a day and on controlled diet with more of proteins.

I have been recommended by my trainer to take whey protein for the better results. My body is giving good reaction for high protein diet, so he adviced me to go for this supplement which will help build muscle and loose fat.

Need all inputs from the experts out there.

Is your trainer offering to sell this to you?


I would be suspect of my trainer at a gym telling me to buy their products. The only real reason you would want to do what he said is body building. You are working on losing weight..I wouldn't do it. If you have a balanced healthy diet where the calorie count is lower than the calories you need (and the exercise is a huge boost to that) then you will be just fine.

There's no magic in protein powders. If you get adequate protein from whole foods, there's really no point in adding a supplement on top of this. However, if you struggle to get adequate protein, powders can certainly help.

If you do go the powder route, I wouldn't go hog wild with it. One, maybe two shakes per day. Powders don't provide benefits that whole foods do such as a wide array of nutrients, as much satiety, etc.

So balance things out.

In very general terms, something like 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass is a good goal on the protein intake front.

I know your trainer is saying you're going to burn fat and build muscle simultaneously. Be mindful of the fact that doing both at the same time is very hard. Given the fact that you are carrying some extra fat and you seem to be a novice, you very well might realize some concurrent body composition changes. They'll be short lived though - I bring this up so you aren't frustrated when you meet reality.
 
I'm kind of in a similar scenario, wondering the same thing. I'm at about 255lbs coming off consuming 3-4K BAD calories a day, and not exercising at all...I've cut down to 1200-1400 Good Calories a day and added 15min of intense cardio (going to lengthen as I can) goal of improving body mass and getting down to around 205. I've supplemented my diet with a daily half scoop of Whey Protein. I was a little leery of starting this, I remember when I was playing HS football I was taking a Whey Supplement that had some crazy amount of calories with it and was suppose to help me Pack on the lbs, now drinking it to lose the lbs seemed kind of counterproductive, though after doing some reading it seems like it can't hurt a weight loss campaign, and given I've used it to replace a small meal, I think it's working to my benefit...

I guess what I'm not clear on, say I'm getting adequate protein from my Diet without the Whey; is too taking the Whey hurting me, or is it just simply having no effect?

If you are eating a well balance diet..then you actually don't need this added stuff. Throw some Soy in if you want some added complete proteins.


Humans are pretty good at getting what we need. We have done it for a pretty long time.

Soy Milk is actually the only kind of milk I drink anymore, and is what I normally mix the Whey Protein with. I understand I don't "need" it, though I guess I'm not clear if it's a negative??
 
I'd look at the ingrediants of the powder amd note the calorie content.

As far as will it harm you? Doubt it.
 
If your normal protein needs are being met by your regular food diet, then the excess protein isn't going to be that much help. In fact, if these powders end up swinging your total calorie intake over your maintainence level, then itll be stored as fat.
 
It won't hurt unless the calories are crowding out some other food with nutrition you need. As an example, if you check the USDA food pyramid recommendations you will see that they recommend quite a few servings of grain and milk. For me it would be 8 slices of bread or equivalent, and 3 cups of milk or equivalent.

Usually when I check, I find that I have fallen short of what they recommend. I'd be even further off if I was using protein supplements.
 
Well, I wouldn't use the USDA food pyramid as my target. Technically you don't need any grains. In fact, you'd probably be healthier with fewer grains and more variety of veggies - even though the USDA now recommends you make "half your grains whole". But I don't really need 6 slices of bread a day to be healthy.

It's also recommending I only get 5 oz of meat a day which puts me way way below my target proteins based on the 1g per pound of lean body mass.

I'd be a lot more concerned about vitamin & mineral content than the food pyramid.

But again, as people were saying before, the protein powder is really only if you're having a hard time getting enough protein from real food, it's not any better than having egg whites or chicken breast.
 
keep taking it.. I take 2 scoops and 2 bananas in the morning and after the gym.. So far I have lost 140 lbs, so yes it works. just add fruits and cookies to make them taste better./..
 
whey cookies now there's an idea..
