Protein Shakes?

Hello!
I use the Weight Loss Forum Site and was told this is a sister site. I have a few questions and I wonder if anyone can help me. I have been drinking Protein Shakes as part of my weight loss/stay fit routine. I am a vegetarian and generally don't like a lot of dairy. I probably eat one serving a day so. I've been using soy or whey powders as a suppliment. I'm wondering if there is one that's better than the other or if they are bad to use in conjunction with each other. I'm also confused about how I can assess my individual protein needs to ensure that I'm getting the right amount (not too much, not too little). I currently do two shakes a day....totalling about 35 grams of protein. My goal is to loose body fat (not gain) and tone up. Does anyone have expertise in this particular area?

Thank you!!

A general rule for protein intake is 1 - 1.5 grams per pound of body weight OR 30% of your daily caloric intake.

like Karl said, 1g per pound of bodyweight, minimum. Many fat loss diets employ a reduction in carbs, and increase in protein and healthy fats (EFA's/Omegas) to create the right caloric deficit, lower available muscle glycogen (free muscle energy) to tempt the body to burn stored fat.

cutting calories too far puts the body into starvation mode...hence why people will bump to 1.5g of protein when dieting.

Do you still eat eggs? They're good protein..as is milk and cottage cheese.

Some people get bloated on soy shakes...others love it. Some reasearch says soy contains plant-estrogens that lower testosterone in men...other research says people on soy have increased test levels. I straddle the fence...I don't fear soy, but I don't make it a major part of my protein intake...mainly my soy come from morningstar brand 'breakfast crumbles'...but I don't have em every day.

Does protein shakes help in weight loss in anywayz? I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but was curious to know.

78,

besides assisting in building muscle, protein can help speed up the metabolism because of it's high thermal effect. In other words, the body has to work hard to break down protein for digestion. This is a good thing.

The protein in bars and powders are broken down into an almost pre-digested form.
Therefore, the body doesnt get the same thermal effect by breaking it down, because it is already broken down.

Being a vegetarian, it will be harder for you to find a variety of foods that will get you the amount of protein you need. But you can do it with nuts, legumes and esp. fish if you eat that!

Just some "food" for thought!

I think all veggies should have protien shakes. They just dont get enough protien.

Tryingtostayfit - You gotta see how many carbs are in your shake. Some powders have carbs and some dont. Try a whey protien "isopure".

What you goyya think about is this... Do you really wanna loose weight? Or do you wanna loose Fat?

Cos if you do put on some muscle,
1, I will make you look slimer
2, It will speed up your metabolism ( so you'll loose weight slowly with out any effort.)

Diet is very important but you gotta be active. If your not active then all the fat you loose will pile on as soon as you stop dieting. Stop thinking about the numbers, it does't matter how much you weigh. Just loose the fat, Build some muscle, and live happy every after!
