Protein Shakes and Workout

Hey everybody!
I'm new to this forum and I got some questions.
First, I'm not fit right now, and I'm planning to work out soon.
I want muscles but not like massive muscles, so I was wondering what is the best way to go about building muscles that are not arnold schawgenator like lol
and also will protein shakes be good for the process? i.e are they healthy and help me move forward in my goal
