Protein Shakes and Breakfast Drinks

Hi all. I was wondering if I could have some of those breakfast drinks in leu of a protein shake. Or, actually, what the heck is a protein shake and how do I go about making one? :D Could someone fill me in on something healthy I could have in the morning?

have a protein shake with real food, but not as a stand alone breakfast as its very unsatisfying and you're more likely to eat more later.

oats or oatmeal mixed with something to make it more appealing are best, wholegrain cereals are ok but watchout for the crappy cereals that are loaded with sugar.

eggs and toast are good if you want something hot, i also like baked beans and egg whites.

as far as shakes go whey protein powder can be bought from gyms, health shops and some supermarkets. shop around, there are lots of posts with 'which is the best......' in them but provided it has a good level of protein (above 15g per scoop) and is not sugar loaded they are all much of the same. they are a supplement though, not a replacement.

I definately agree with benelson101.

Just a hint on the protien shakes for better efficeincy. Look for amino based protines. They are more easily and wholly assimilated in the body, especially L-blahblah's not the D-blahblah's. Also, try to use the shake or drink shortly before your excercise for more stamina, or shortly after for better recovery.

If you are unaware of what protein shakes are, you get the protein powders at many places, I usually get mine from GNC, you can get a shaker even there (not necessarily) you can actually blend the powder with a blender. Different people take it in different ways, some take it with fruit juice, some with milk and some with water, its all how you wanna taste it.

There are lot many flavours too.

Also, the above two replies makes lot of sense.:)

Avoid stuff like Carnation instant breakfast...these have little protein and a lot of simple sugar carbs.

Breakfast is important. You've been fasting for about 8-10 hours while asleep, so the body wants quality food.
A breakfast with complex carbs, fiber, and protein is ideal. it'll refuel you, and stick with you all morning.

I tend to have eggs and oatmeal almost every day. more specificaly, 5 egg whites and 1 or 2 egg yolks, which gives me 20-23g of protein.
1/2 cup (uncooked) Old fashioned Quaker oatmeal, takes about 2 mins to microwave. around 30g of carbs, and several grams of fiber. i put splenda, cinnamon and sometimes a tablespoon of natty peanut butter in it.

for my second breakfast, around 10-10:30am, i'll knock back a protein shake (Optimum nutrition, pro complex, chocolate flavor) and then its either a pack of instant oatmeal, or some other kind of complex carb, and maybe some fruit.

I'm a very strong advocate of eating 5-6, sometimes 7, meals a day. it really keeps your metabolism going, and you'll have energy all day. Since I don't gorge myself during lunch, especially not eating fast food, I'm not lethargic all afternoon like my co-workers.

If you do want a breakfast shake, try looking at your local healthfood store, like a market that specializes in whole, organic, or all natural foods. The shakes there are most likely going to be packed with more complex sugars (unrefined or sugar substitutes), more protein and more fiber. With these drinks, you could add a bit more milk and your protien mix to them and kill two birds with one stone for those mornings where you don't have time to make breakfast.

Here is a couple protein shakes I make:

1 cp fat free plain yogurt.
1/2 cp 1-2% cottage cheese.
1/2 cp skim milk
1/2 scp choco whey.
1-2 tbsp smucker's natural pb. Sub olive oil for about 1/2 calories and fat.
1 pkt roundy's no sugar added instant hot cocoa mix. (find a good sub for this).

NOTE: w/ pb it's about 400-450 cals, so you may want to drink 1/2 with fruit, veggies and/or something else and the other half later.
blend until smooth. Tasty and filling.

or...

1scp ON choco casein protien
2 cps skim milk

not as good as the previous, but decent.
