Protein Drink

Question on starting to drink protein shakes. I have a varied workout schedule -- own a business and have 2 kids to shuttle to soccer practices. I will usually walk on treadmill for 1 hour early in the morning. I then take my daughter to workout in the afternoon for another hour where I might walk on the track or use the machines. Normally I do around 20 sets of 12-15 reps on various machines plus crunches, squats and lunges. Days we don't go to the gym I use free weights at home and do squats, lunges and crunches there. At soccer practice I might walk for another 30-45 minutes. Usually walk 1 to 1 1/2 hours 6 or 7 days per week. I walk hard with some running thrown in to elevate my heart rate (bad ankle, can't run alot).

Should I add a protein drink? I have changed my diet to add more protein and to get more calories into it. I had been living off 1000 calories a day. However, the last couple weeks I have stopped losing weight despite not eating and exercising alot. I'm adding more protein rich food to my diet to eat 4 times per day getting up to 1500 calories per day.

I'd appreciate any help!!

Sounds like you may need to eat more! 1000 calories isn't much at all and your metabolism may have slowed down too much. Slowly bring it up to 1400-1600 and eat 5-6 times a day, adding protein shakes + perhaps fruit or something healthy for the additional meals. Keep up your exercise of course and hopefully you should see more weight drop off soon.

Check out and for more detailed info.

CFlake, thanks for the info. When would you recommend I drink the shake? Normally after I work out in the afternoon I will eat dinner fairly soon after. Also, any recommendations on brands of whey or ways to fix it. Thanks.

I think the main thing to do is to spread the meals out so your stomach is always doing something. Before or after exercise is usually a personal choice, most people (including me) prefer to exercise on an empty stomach, so after is better.

As far as brands, just pick the one with the best taste and least sugar - which unfortunately are two opposing ideas. I usually go with Optimum Nutrition (ON) or the GNC brand, but it's more expensive. Oh and depending on how much you want to get into it, you can buy a fast digested protein (whey) for the day and a slow protein (calcium caseinate) for just before bed, but I wouldn't worry about that too much just yet.. go with the whey for now as it tastes better.

I drink a protein drink after my workouts. I think right now what I have in the house is Body Fortress optimum powder ... I don't really try to make it into any kind of treat, I just mix it with 8 oz of water and chug it. ;)

I would recommend you take the shake 30-45 min after your workout and
definetly add more calories 1000 a day is to close to starving unless you are 3 foot 9. It sounds like you don't need to lose weight, but you want to put on muscle. Remeber your weight is not important it is your percentage of body fat you want low to get the physique we all aspire for. An example is you would have a better looking body at 175 pounds and 4% bodyfat than 165 pounds at 8 or 9% body fat. When you take the shakes and you put on that muscle remeber to switch up your exercises every six weeks because your body will get used to them.
