Protein Drink After or Before Workout?

I have been working out for about 3 months now and just about a month ago I started to use a WHEY supplement. Basically what I do is after I am done my workout I take about two scoops of the whey and mix it with about a half a litre of milk and a banana. Then I gulp it all down. So is this correct? Should I be doing this before or after my workout? Also should I eat red meat after my workout?

Note: I am trying to gain muscle, not tone it.

I take a PowerBar refuel drink. It actually tastes really good and I drink it after the workout because, well because it says to on the bottle. But I think it helps to drink protein shakes after your workout as you begin to rest. I'm not quite sure though.

Also, I had a whey supplement once. It was 17g of protein per scoop. I think you should jsut stick to one scoop and maybe two shakes. If you take too much protein at once your body may not absorb it all.

Do it after your workout because thats when your body starts to repair and when it needs the protein....so i have been told....BY EVERYONE!!! at my gym any way

before AND after

its good to drink it 30-40 minutes(depending on your metabolism) before you work out, then drink again after with a banana or something light to help it go down.

I drink whey protein supplement within 30 minutes of my workout and eat a wholesome meal no more than 1.5-2 hours after my workout.

There was just a big, long discussion on the subject...the most recent research into nutrient and meal timing shows that drinking the shake before and during your workout is your best bet. The old studies that compared placebo, carb beverage and/or protein+carb beverages were all performed in fasting (not eating beforehand) conditions, which is not real-world. Once you introduce pre-WO nutrition, it changes the usability of the study results.
