Protein bars, anyone?

Hey guys,

during the days I work, I found it hard to keep up with my 6 meal a day plan, so starting just a few days ago, I included protein bars into my diet (as one of the six meals). Ever since then, I haven't lost an ounce of weight. I've been the same weight for the past five days.

I mean, the protein bars I use are really low in sugar, unlike other ones with ridiculously high sugar content. What's going on here?

I've been pushing myself to do more cardio during the last five days, and I began to lift weights too. Do you guys think it's the protein bar that's stunting my weight loss? Should I not eat them while I try to lose weight?

So frustrated and confused...

maybe try a MR bar instead.. a protein bar seems a little small to be considered a meal. but 5 days isn't that long to keep the same weight.. as you continue losing weight it will be harder and harder to lose, but you can still do it! just a lil more intensity & commitment.

i know of a good mr bar (met-rx big 100) but i use it to bulk.. prob not ne good while you're trying to lose weight, it's got a lot of sugar. :/ sry

protein bars = NO good.

Just because they're low in sugar or whatever, doesn't mean they're clean and good for you. They are loaded with preservatives and other unnatural ingredients that will only hinder fat loss. Protein bars are definitely a probable cause to your lack of weight loss.

My suggestion is to grill some chicken and eat it cold (that's what I do for 4 of my meals).

i agree with spockafina (as usual) ;)

once in a blue moon is fine but not as part of a daily diet. check labels carefully :)

I agree there are many poor quality bars out there with too many preservatives, but if you get the good ones it does not hinder fast loss.
I've seen many cases where people supplement with protein bars and lose a hell of a lot of weight. If you look hard you will find the good ones... with very low amounts of preservatives.

any recommendations, stalefish?

what is it that i should look for in a good protein bar? Other than sugar content, fat/carb/protein ratios?

Aight. After two days of not consuming any protein bar, I finally got over my plateau. But I'm still not sure, whether it's from not eating protein bars or what. This is so confusing...

chicken breast + serving of beans = way better than protein bar.

250 calories
3g of fat
40gcarbs
7g fiber
30g protein

just rough estimates, but its very close to those numbers.

Cool.

Yo, how do you prepare beans? Do you buy one of those canned ones and just reheat them later?

yeah, i usually get these huge cans of van camps baked beans in tomatoe sauce. may sound nasty in tomatoe sauce, but i think its good. tastes normal too me. i would go with bush beans, but there are more sugars in there. tomatoe sauce and beans is more basic. i usually just put the whole can in a huge container. eat it cold with a serving of cottage cheese on top and with chicken breast. i love cottage cheese on top of beans...so good to me. usually i will either choose, cottage cheese on top of beans or beans and chicken. so there yah go bud

the other possablitiy is to make your own bars, which is what I do somtimes. this way, you can still carry it around and there is no additives, also cheeper anyway you can easly make your own recipie or find one some where else but here is one idea: I also added a little flax oil, and replaced a few other things but this is just to get you started with an idea. between spock and abear most subjects are covered 3.2 seconds after there posted hahaa, I end up making only small contributions.

For Bulking: MRBs (Meal Replacement Bars):

Combine in large mixing bowl:

3 Cups Oatmeal
1/2 Cup Natural Peanut butter
1 cup Skim Milk
4 Scoops Protein Powder
dash of cinnamon

Mix until a sticky batter is formed (may take a few minutes)

use a large spoon to spread out the mix into the bottom of a Pam-sprayed glass or metal cooking tray (spread until even)

top with 4-8 packets splenda

put in the fridge overnight and cut into 8 equal bars that yield:

11g fat (good monounsaturated fats)
26g carbs
21g protein

285 calories

hey phaledax, how do your bars come out? i did some years ago and they came out pretty decent. might start doing some again at some point :)

I keep experimenting with new recipies and if I find a good one ill be sure to let you know. otherwise they taste better than most store bars, and it's great for my lifestyle, I would definatly recomend it if your out an about with no time to get a real meal. although mixing it together in the right order to get a good taste and texture is some what of an art. I would tell your mom that you want to get a kea ingreadiant to a delicious snack, thats very healthy for you. or somthing along thoes line and im sure you can win her over.

Hmmm... phaledax, why do you say the recipe's for bulking? Is it cuz you dun think people who r tryin to slim down should use it?

jus askin, cuz 285 cal for a meal isn't that bad even for people trying to lose weight. Think i might try that recipe myself. ;)
