Problems seeing results

Hey guys,

New to the forum and wanted to say hi and hope I can get and give some help while I'm here.

The question I have is that I've been lifting on and off again for years but I finally got really serious and have been lifting 3-4 times a week HARD for 2 months now. I've definitely seen results because I can lift 15-30lbs more weight in every exercise. The problem is I don't see any results physically. My biceps, chest, triceps etc look exactly the same. No real definition, still soft unless I flex etc. Are there exercises that help build shape in muscles because I'm definitely increasing strength but it really isn't showing physically.

Thanks

What are your goals?

You need to have a good diet to go along with your training, or else your training is next to useless.

The first few months of lifting result in 'neural learning'. Basically, your muscles are learning how to work. Once you get past this, then you'll start putting on some size.

What does your routine look like? How about your diet? Are you squatting or DLing?

Well I don't really have strict, defined goals per se. Just to reduce body fat to the point that I can see my abs and put on muscle in my upper body. I'm at college right now so I'm limited to three meals a day ( i know 5-8 is preferred) but I don't eat crap like pizzas and chips. I usually have two salads, lots of chicken and other forms of protein, and rice or pasta for good carbs.

Steve-O this is the first time I've heard of this 'neural learning' thing before. I usually lift every other day three times a week. Working 2 muscle groups every day. I've only been squatting for about three weeks but no dead lifting. Is this an important exercise?

Let me know if you want a more detailed look at my routine. Right now I'm usually doing 5 reps of 3 sets with each set moderately increasing in weight until I reach my max on 3rd set. I've been looking around at the posts and many people have many different types of reps/sets that they are doing. Is 5/3 okay is there something better to allow me to see results?

Take some pictures now. You have probably progressed but because the change is only incremental on a week to week basis, you THINK you haven't made increases in size. Take some pics now and then again in 3 months. If you're lifting hard, sleeping hard, and eating good, you should definitely see a difference.

A lot of times there's differences that you don't even notice. There was a time where I was feeling the same way, and my girlfriend was like "did you like get bigger or something?" and I go "I don't know, I look bigger? bigger how?" she said in the chest and shoulders. Then I look in the mirror and I was like "yea I guess you're right". But when I started lifting at first I was basically just trying to get stronger and after about 3 months is when I started noticing a lot of changes and my workouts weren't even that great.

Great. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Well I have six weeks before school ends and about 12 weeks to lift in the summer. I should definitely see results if I lift hard the whole time. Thanks for the posts guys it really helped.
