Problem with motivation...

Hey all, I'm a 20 year old student who is about 30 lbs overweight. I have exercised and dieted for years, but I cannot get rid of my "gut". It gets really discouraging when I put forth all the effort and see no results. I'll be highly motivated for about two months, then all of a sudden have no desire to work out or eat right and I'll completely relapse for two more months.

What have any of you done to keep your motivation level up? And any advice on how to finally get rid of my belly?

Here's a couple of tips that help me.

1. Map your progress, Take before pictures, weigh yourself measure your self right everything down and see how your body changes.

2. Have a room where you workout, I've converted a room in my house into a gym with some basic equipment like some dumbells, bench and rowing machine, mirrors. When I go in there I automatically switch to workout mode and there's nothing to distract me. Plus you can make alot of equipment yourself for cheap. Like a pull up bar, dip bars, pushup handles etc...

3.Make a plan AND WRITE IT DOWN. Decide what excersises you are going to do on what days and when you are going to rest and what you're going to eat and when and stick to it. Often If i go to the gym and I havent planned what i'm going to do there then I end up doing nothing.

4. Find a healthy diet that doesn't deprive you of anything. You can eat fats if they're the right fats Like olive oil and nuts, you can eat carbs if they are the right carbs, low GI, wholegrain. You can definately eat proteins, lean proteins. I recommend the mens health abs diet, see if you can find it in the library and read it.

5. Make one day a week where you can eat anything, but only ONE. That way you wont go crazy craving chocolate, ice cream and pizza.

6. Get some friends together who also want to lose weight and compete with each other, who can run the furthest who can do the most reps, who can lift the most weight etc.. then try and beat each other, makes working out fun, and you're always pushing each other. But make sure that you don't end up getting together and just talking about losing weight and not actually doing anything, which can easily happen.

7. Set goals, Some one once said that if you're not aiming for anything you'll hit it every time! meaning that if you dont set a goal, you'll be satisfied with whatever you achieve, even if you achieve nothing.

8. Read books, watch videos. Go on youtube and check out all the videos of people who have transformed there bodies, plus check out all the workouts there are on the net, theres a lot of motivational stuff out there, You tube is a goldmine!. Read books about the benefits of healthy eating and you'll soon want to ditch the fries and grab the fruit.

9. Find reasons outside of yourself. you wanna look good for your girlfriend or boyfriend/ wife or husband. You wanna win the race. you wanna be able to run around the yard with your kids one day without going into cardiac arrest. That way when you dont feel like eating right or working out you can say to yourself. "I dont feel like doing this, but I do want to be able to take my shirt off at the beach" Or I dont feel like doing this, but I do want to be ready for that race in 3 months time" or what ever you want. I find keeping the reason focused on other people or things helps, that way, what I feel is irrelevant because I'm not doing it for myself i'm doing it for some bigger cause.

Oh well that's pretty much all I got for you. Hope it helps.

when im stuck for motivation i simply look at my children, i know that i want to be around when they are older, i want to see my grandchildren.

to me that is more then enough motivation and thats what really keeps me going!

Iff you do not hav children, think about the future, don't you want to be around in the next few decades?

Weight Loss

What many people try and do is try and do too much too soon. They suddenly go from a relatively sedentary lifestyle to that of an Olympic athlete! This type of effort cannot be maintained. For permanent weight loss, permanent lifestyle changes are needed. You cannot live like a monk forever!

Make a few small changes and ingrain them into your life. If for example you eat a bar of chocolate with your lunch everyday, cut this out. Maybe allow yourself one once a week - like a friday treat. A small permanent change like this could save you 6 bars of chocolate worth of callories per week, which will definitely make a difference, providing you do not eat more to 'make up for it'.

If you use lots of mayonnaise, switch to salad cream, as it contains only a fraction of the fat content. Grills your food instead of fry it. If you drink lots of beer or wine, then cut down. Maybe move to spirits, and mix with fresh fruit juices.

The point is, don't be too hard on yourself when trying to lose weight. You still have to live your life, and if it makes you unhappy, you will ultimately rebel against your regime.

:cheers2:
