Press Ups

What do you recommend?

Just for press ups? They should be performed like every other exercise and at least a couple of days recovery time is needed before performing them again.

If you wanted to know what I recommend in terms of alternate exercises then I'd say you need a full body workout (read weight training 101 sticky).

Press ups are too easy for most people to use them for muscle building, you can buy things like bands though which add extra resistence to the movement making it more productive
 
or, you can work toward developing a handstand, and then walking on your hands, and then doing balancing pressups. That'll take you some time to develop and it will get your whole core involved! and you can do it anywhere.
