Press Ups

Hi,

I do 75 pressups in one set most days. The press ups i do are the bulk standard, straight up and down type.

This is hard to describe exactly but i could swear pressups make your breathing worse. This isnt the first time ive thought this as i thought the same thing a few years ago. And when I consider it after doing a lot of pressups your chest does 'sag' forward so to speak. I mean around the edge of the chest leans forward and the centre of the chest is pushed back so your kind of hunched over. And this hunching where the muscles of the chest have been used in that manner makes your breathing worse. I suspect...

Anyone else have any experience of doing pressups and there effect on breathing?

any exersice will affect you're breathing.. try to run as fast as you can for 5 minnutes, you will breathe heavy, its the same with pressups..

If your are working out your chest muscles and neglect your back muscles i believe your will develop a hunch in the shoulders as you say. I guess this could restrict breathing.... if you keep having difficulty breathing i'd get a doctor to check it out.

Like Karky said, 75 press ups is going to make you breathe harder. It seems highly unlikely that you have developed your muscles in such a way as to restrict your breathing. It is certainly not something I have ever heard of before...

When I do press ups it doesn't affect my breathing like that. I breathe heavily but it feels normal... Elaborate if you can?

You're breathing with more difficulty because your posture is poor. Your posture is poor because your muscles are imbalanced. Your muscles are imbalanced because you only work your chest, and do not work agonist muscles (back -- lats, traps, etc).
