Presence of fat hurts weight loss

Some overweight or obese people have mutated or altered genes that initially make it difficult to lose weight and later make it easier to regain lost body weight.

Increased body fat results in higher levels of inflammatory substances in the blood, which hinders the loss of weight, researchers in Spain said.

Estibaliz Goyenechea Soto, a scientist at the University of Navarra School of Pharmacy, examined how the individual genetics of obese patients can help or hinder weight loss when dieting and influence the subsequent long-term maintenance of their weight loss.

Some overweight or obese people have mutated or altered genes that initially make it difficult to lose weight and later make it easier to regain lost body weight in a period of six months or a year.

This problem occurs similarly in patients who have higher levels of inflammatory substances in their blood.

This genetic predisposition, along with external and personal factors such as inadequate dietary habits or physical inactivity, predispose patients to obesity.

The study involved 180 overweight or obese patients, who followed a low-calorie diet for eight weeks and were evaluated after six months and again a year after the end of the dietary intervention.

The researchers said genetic and plasma biomarkers may predict the response of obese patients to specific diets that could result in developing customized therapeutic strategies based on the genetic characteristics of each person.

I don't think it's nonsense.

I do however, think that this is a study of 180 people, in a very specific diet, under certain controlled elements and I'm not sure it necessarily applies to the people that frequent this forum.

So, it's nice to know, but it won't make much of a difference to anyone here unless you were part of that study.

Sorry for post if you all feel that it does not contribute to everybody's knowledge.

Just wanted to share with all why some people just can't get their weight off no matter what they try.

Thanks

That's simply not true, sorry.

I read the brief linked above and then did a search for the original document. If you read the study, it is full of words like "may" and "might" and "contribute to" and so forth.

The study does NOT say that this is the reason some people can't lose weight at all. It says that there MAY be SOME indication that this could SLOW weight loss for SOME obese people.

This is why blanket statements and "sound bite" fitness are such a problem. People will read what you wrote and use it as yet another excuse for why they stay fat.

God Kara i guess you just don't get it. obviously Estibaliz Goyenechea Soto, a scientist at the University of Navarra School of Pharmacy is always right. When she is not bullfighting she is proving that people who are to fat can not lose weight. I guess they don't get NBC in spain. But God with a name like Estibaliz Goyenechea Soto she has gotta be really credible

Maybe I am wrong, I have always seen that when I try to take fat out of a clients diet that it actually becomes harder for them to lose weight.

There is a reason why having excess body fat after dieting and major weight loss causes weight to be gained back so easily - it's because, despite even being at a "healthy" BMI, the muscle to fat ratio is very low, e.g. the body fat % is still very high (too much muscle and not enough fat was lost during dieting). When one reaches the weight goal, they think to up their kcal intake to "maintenance" level. However, being at your ideal weight with 15% body fat your maintenance kcal is a lot higher than it is when being at your ideal weight with 25-30% body fat. Maintenance kcal is tightly tied to the proportion of muscle to fat, not to having reached your ideal weight and being able to fit into your favorite pair of jeans. One pound of muscle will burn about 50kcal per day, so if you have 40 lbs of muscle then you could burn 2000kcal per day with no exercise. If you have 25 lbs of muscle, which is a generous estimate for most people, then eating 2000kcal per day with no exercise will most likely cause you to rapidly gain weight. Note that pounds of muscle a person has is not the same as "lean body mass" which also includes your bones and internal organs.

The biggest factor, other than simply consuming more kcal than is being burned, that makes it difficult for 99% of the people with weight loss problems to lose weight is the refusal to either give up or severly limit dietary intake of simple carbs. The other 1% or even less may have thyroid disorders, but this is truly rare. Most often, the problem is insulin resistance and moving toward development of type 2 diabetes, caused by overconsumption of simple carbs.

Right. Eating fat reduces food cravings.

Sometimes I eat a 100g piece (about 500 kcal) of a really smelly blue cheese, or a goat cheese. It tastes soooo good. Hasn't stopped me from losing weight at all.

This post takes the hope of obese people. But anyway, can you cite proper diet or exercise can counteract these certain genes, chemical, etc.?
