Powder/Bar Help

I was told conflicting things at the store. First, I was told by one employee that Optimum Nutrition "100% Whey Protein" was the best protein powder, and then on a different day was told by another employee that Body Tech "Whey Tech" was. Can you guys please help clear this up for me?

Also, I am looking for the best protein bar (high protein, low sugar/fat ). I was reccomended Lean Body by the employee at the store. Please verify this or tell me if the information I got was false please. Thanks a lot in advance...

Note: I am looking to gain muscle mass and lose body fat and am on a weight training program.
Also, I realize protein bars should not be incorporated into my regular diet, but I like to have them to keep in my car when I can't get my shakes in.

it's really preference on powder.. i prefer optimum nutrition over anything else.. and if you must, for protein bars, i eat met-rx protein plus, bc they're a reputable name with something to lose..

everywhere you go people will have their own favourite powders and bars.
If you hear from a good amount of sources that something is quality, then it most likely is ... even if the guy at your local supplement store doesnt agree.

I take ON's 100% whey and i like it, i also know there are many other good powders out there ... but decide to not fret over it as it wont make too much of a difference (or none at all).

I recommend Tri-o-plex protein bars. They are great ... not all fancy, good lookin ... but they taste alot better than they look. But looking past the appearance/taste factor, with 35carbs (9 from sugar, 6g of fiber! and 20 from complex carbs ... and a nice 33g of protein.) It has 16g of fat (in peanut butter choc. chip) with only 3g saturates. :D And to add to it all, it is a good source of Vitamin C, B12, Zinc and other vitamins.

Thanks for the replies. Also, I was reccommended to take meal replacements after workouts as opposed to the shakes. He reccomended the Body Tech "Tech X" meal replacements to me. Is the information correct that I got, and if it is, is this the best meal replacement (Body Tech "Tech X")? Thanks again...

Who recommended the MRPs? The guy at the supplement store? Hes there to make a profit , and can give a damn about your health.

Lets try this, what do you wish to achieve with the Powder/bar? Plain old protein supplementation? Recovery?

I realize this aevans410, that's why I'm askin' you guys. Well, I have about 5-6 months until my season begins. I am looking to gain muscle mass and lose body fat. I am also weight training 3 times a week. So, I need to consume as much calories/protein as possible and little sugar/fat. I hope this answered your question aevans410, please let me know if I didn't, and thanks for your help.

I wanted to make sure that it was the store recommending them and not someone like a trainer or anything. For plain old protein supplementation (which is sounding like what you want to do) use a protein powder. EAS or Optimum Nutrition are good choices. The bad thing about MRPs are they have more stuff that you can get from whole foods easily therefore they are overpriced. Protein is hard to get by itself out of whole foods, thats why the powders are so popular. If you happen to be going to GNC (they're known for this) they'll push you towards their brand of powder. Don't let them. Tell them its EAS Myoplex or ON, or nothing.

Ah man thanks for the information. He also reccomended Labrada Lean Body Bars as a protein bar.... was this a good reccomondation?

I stay away from protein bars. Too much extra stuff in em. I have to agree with Mreik though, if you need to use bars go with Met-rx, the met-rx name is reputable.

Thanks again. Just one more thing - what is all this Body Tech stuff he reccomended? Is this even a reputable/popular company at all or was he just pushing total crap on me? (I am going to use Optimum Nutrition 100% Powder, I am just curious to see if this guy was trying to completely rip me off.)

What store was it?

Check the label , see if its produced by the company who runs the store. They also could be getting freebies and/or kickbacks for selling this certain product.

/start opinionated rant

Thats what really disgusts me about supplement stores. (this is not meant to be offensive to you G, please don't take it that way) People like you go into these stores, having all the best intentions in the world to get into better shape, gain muscle, lose weight, and they are taken advantage of by these companies. Good thing for you is you had the intelligence to get a second opinion before you dropped a bunch of money on usless s***. I went into a GNC the other night to check their price on ON whey, the lady behind the counter came up to me and asked me if I could be helped, I told her I was looking at prices for whey. She told me that the Pro Performance stuff was on sale (right on cue) and I politely told her I wasn't interested in the Pro Performance. After another attempt at a high pressure sales pitch I calmly said
"Miss, I understand you really like the Pro Performance. It has less whey protein per serving, costs about 10 cents more per serving, and quite frankly, tastes like clumpy brown crap". After that, she quietly went on her way while I worked. This is somebody's health were talking about here, not a way to get into someone's wallet.

/end rant.

He may not necessarily been trying to rip you off, but there may have been alterior motives in work.

Aevans, while I have you here, let me ask you another question (unrelated to the previous topic). Like I said earlier, I am looking to build muscle mass and lose body fat. I am on the high calorie/protein diet and am weight training 3 times a week (Tuesday,Thursday,Saturday). My question is, what should I do for cardio? I am afraid of not gaining muscle or of losing muscle, so can you advise me how I should go about this?
By the way - you were exactly right, the product is made by the store that sold me it (I just looked).

Please, call me Allen :D How high of a calorie diet are we talking about here? The problem with what you want to do is its counter productive. If your eating high enough to build some muscle, you will probably store a bit of excess fat. What you can do though it bulk up, then cut, or eat at a slight deficit of calories and maintain what muscle you have while cutting fat. The debate on cardio has raged on for years now. Some people think that cardio burns muscle, some people think it doesn't. Its very difficult (not impossible) to put on muscle while losing fat. The gains you can get are better if you keep the two separate. For fat loss, what I do is 3 days of HIIT (theres a hiit forum here for info), 5 minute warm up-20 min of training- 5 min cool down, and 2 days of solid moderate cardio a week (30 minutes). Training heavy enough while maintaining a slight deficit will not cause you muscle.

if i may but in.. i am currently in a bulk period (high calories/high protein) and as for cardio, i do explosion exercises at a cardio pace, only for about 10 minutes.. it allows me to continue bulking for longer (bc i stop bulking once i reach a certain bf%), but i havent noticed a difference bt when i do that and when i dont, in terms of gaining muscle..

just make sure you always have protein in ur body before any type of cardio, or cardio paced training

Mreik, would you please go into a little further detail regarding your "explosion excercises at a cardio pace" please? Thanks.

~standing stationary hold 5 lbs weights (or no weights @ all) and jumping as high as you can for about 10 minutes(go down like you're squating, and lunge up)
~on a chest day, doing pushups(if its to hard instead of ur feet being ur connection to the floor, use ur knees) repeat the pushup motion except with much more intensity so @ full arm extension your hands can't touch the floor, ur almost throwing ur torso in the air(make sure ur elbows have a slight bend before your hand hit the ground again)
~i will try to describe this, for i dont know the name... i commonly refer to them as skaters; standing with knees slightly bent, jump either to the left or right, land on ur outside foot, and bring ur inside knee @ 90 degree and bring it behind ur outside leg. go back and forth until failure

i was shown these exercises by the FAU football training staff, these exercises get my heart rate going pretty good, obviously the longer you can do them the more cardio like they will become. you can do this with almost any exercise, just pick a very low weight 5-25% of ur 1RM, and perform the exercise very rapidly, but keep control of the weight. of coarse with explosion exercises there is much more risk of injury if done wrong, so be careful..
