Next month will be 5 years since I graduated college and entered the real world. I graduated college in great shape......lean/muscular (165 lbs), runner's body, active, athletic.......and then I moved to a new city, stopped playing basketball, which led to stop working out, my eating habits changed, etc. and over the past 5 years my weight has balooned to 256.8 lbs this morning. That's down from 265 lbs in February but I had gotten down to 230 lbs this summer before gaining it all back.

My lifestyle has changed so much and I am disgusted for letting it happen. I miss playing basketball, I miss running, I miss being athletic and all of my weight gain has been a result of being lazy and using food to deal wtih work stress, etc. (bad excuse/habit but it's how I started to gain the weight).

I know why I gained the weight and I know what I need to do to lose it. So no more putting it off, no more excuses, no more BS. I'm sick and tired that the past five "new years" I have started a "diet" that failed each time. No more failures. I'm turning 30 at the end of February and I am determined to be well on my way to regaining my athletic life style by then.

I am hoping that keeping a journal will not only help keep me focussed but allow me to "meet" and get support from people with similar goals as myself. As I mentioned earlier, I weighed in this morning at 256.8 lbs and would like to reach my target weight of 165 - 170 lbs by this summer.

Cheers,
Adam

Welcome aboard. When I was 375 pounds (July 1 of this year), one of my first exercises was just shooting hoops, chasing the ball down and shooting again. Been doing a lot of that four almost five months now (slowly picking up the pace and intensity) and have lost 60 pounds. I'm 41. Two weeks ago in a fit of pure insanity, I actually played two on two (the most exhausting type) with three other guys at the gym. That was pretty dumb at still over 300 pounds but I made it and my team actually won both games (mostly due to my teammate but I drained a couple of shots). I was elated that I had worked hard enough to be able to do it.

That is to say I don't think there's anything stopping you right now from getting right back into basketball except a court and a ball. You might not be able to move really well for a bit, but the jump shot comes back very quickly provided you had decent form to begin with. And the rest of the game isn't nearly as much fun as burying jumpers anyway. The beauty of it is doing something you enjoy so much turns out to be nothing at all like 'working out.'

And getting started on something like that can often lead to improving your fitness and diet by showing yourself what you're actually capable of.
