Pot Belly!

I have a problem. Despite being in very good shape and eating a very good diet I have a bit of a pot belly that just will not go away!

I have very little body fat and I cannot actually pinch an inch off my belly- it is firm, almost like a pregnant womans stomach! If I tense my abs Naked Warrior style I actually have a clearly defined 8-pack but as soon as I relax it just sticks out again.

My posture is Ok and I dont have too much lumbar lordosis so I just dont know how to get rid of it. Any suggestions?

 Are you talking about PROTRUDING ABS?.....different from an actual pot belly...which have to do with fat, but also the distention/ bloatedness of the intestines, organs, including abs. Also are you saying that you have not even an inch of fat to pinch on your waistline...that it is as tight as a pregnant womans belly?. If I have not misunderstand and if it is protruding abs...you are not alone. I noticed the same problem. Upon venturing to do an abs intense focus for a couple of months...there it was..protuding abs. Its a muscle and I could of more than likely just overworked it..rightly or wrongly?.

Read short entry scroll down page: #7 Use only the right amount of training.

Also see "abs and round bellys" post ..in the AT HOME section of this site.

Get enough water...(12"; taller bottles; just refill as needed..or a few medium or smaller bottle for on the go). Drink on an empty stomach or at least an hour before and/or after a meal which helps promote less bloating and digestive interuptions. Also lots of fruits & veggies (organic preferably)...really keep me less hungry, more satisifed, filled easier/better, and more disciplined in my diet. I've found that these have contributed to helping my abs overcome the protruding. Of course both also contribute to proper elimination;health;and directly/indiecty to abs fitness. :D

Chances are you have protruding abs due to transverse abdominal weakness. Yep...ab weakness....adn the answer is not more ab crunches either. The problem may be due to poor lumbar/hip position (anterior pelvic tilt), or true abdominal distending. What you can do is strengthen the external obliques by performing reverse ab crunches with ankles, knees, adn hips flexed. Send me your e-mail address and I can send you a pic of the exericse I am describing.

Ensure you are not bloated. Check this list for possible causes and symptoms...

Like Kylee suggests, drink plenty of water.

Cathy.

I drink about 3 litres a day and I eat very well.

I am thinking it might be stress-related- I heard excess cortisol can cause abdominal fat storage...

I know someone who recently really stressed out...couldn't eat. That person said felt a knot in that hollow area just above the stomach..between the ribs...in line with the throat. The body has a tremedous ability to hold in gas/air and target certain stress areas (like the one abovementioned but not limited to..e.g gulping or rushing food/liquid consumption or reclining after meals) which can cause bloating; and that may mimic or add to an abs issue. As you get into the 30's 40's..etc metabolism slows down a bit which again can effect ones midsection. This may or may not be the case for you, it could just be the protruding abs anatomically speaking. But just in case, have you tried some peppermint tea or other such soothing herbal teas that might help?. Also do you think it could simply be something in your diet that might be the cause of this?.
