Hey all. First I would like to say hello as this is my first post on this forum.
I have a few questions on some pain I am having on the posterior (inside) of my left leg while running. To give some detailed background information, I have flat feet when standing straight up, but I can make an arch if I stand on my tippy toes. Starting in January 2008 I started a new workout routine. Of course this posed tremendous changes for my body. Currently I’m a 22 years old, average build, 5’8”, 165 lbs. No medical conditions of any kind and healthy. When I started my new routine I knew from high school that I should stretch, which I did. Now I must admit, back in Jan of 2008 I did push myself hard on the treadmill and which I noticed pain on my left inner leg where my calf muscle meets my shin bone.
A student I knew from my college who majored in sports fitness told me not to run through the pain, which she said I could make it worse and get a stress fracture. Well, trying to make a long story short, I went and had physical therapy on my leg. The doctor told me I had lactic acid build up right on the side of my shin bone. He said I probably did too much too quick. Well, I stopped running for one month and my leg was fine again. During that lay off time I stretched and iced pretty much daily. Around April 2008 I got new running shoes from this store called “Run For Your Life” which they said would help my flat feet while running. Those seemed to help tremendously when I ran. In the same month (April 2008) I started slower on the treadmill and went shorter distances.
Now, fast forward to almost March 2009 and I’m running at 7.5 to 8 MPH on the treadmill going constantly for about 30 minutes, which is great for me. Now when I run I still have very moderate pain (more like a twinge) in my inner left leg. My right leg has never bothered me and it just seems that my left leg is lagging a bit. It could definitely be psychological, but the pain is there. I still stretch before, run, ice 20 min, stretch, ice another 20 min on that part of the leg.
My question(s) is: is this moderate pain something I should worry about? Can I run through it? Is this the same thing as a shin splint or is it different? Do I need to have it checked out? I just don’t want to injure myself by keeping in shape. And how will I ever improve my workout if I keep on having to rest for my leg?
I drink pretty much only water, on occasion I go out for alcoholic drinks with my friends, but nothing serious. I don’t have the healthiest diet in the world, but it isn’t terrible.
If anyone has any insight, you would be helping me out a lot since I know nothing about sports injury or muscles. I found this link to be very helpful to me: (under the posterior section).
Thanks!
