so i am the opposite of all of you guys, i DONT want to lose weight, but i have a question regarding weight loss.

i used to have puffy cheeks and stuff real cute stuff but at 18 i went through a very stressful time, didnt eat much, smoked lots of cigs the works and i lost a ton of weight in my face, now i look like a different person. very gaunt and totally gross.
if i begin eating regularly again, eating alot in a day will my face go back to normal?

I don't think anyone here is going to be able to answer that.

If you gain weight though, the face is usually, for most, one of the first places to show it. I wouldn't go nuts in terms of eating though. If you need to gain weight, slowly ramping up calories into a conservative deficit would be your best bet.

Adding in some resistance training while you're doing it wouldn't hurt either.

i need to go food crazy though. im 18, 5'11 and only.. 123 pounds :| that sucks big time. thanks for the answer though, im just looking for something re-assuring cuz i feel like i blew it big time. im getting 3000 calories in solids a day plus 1000 in weight gainer plus 600 in liquids so i should be ok i think

Doing so will be stupid, FYI.

You'd just gain a bunch of fat. Sure, your face might not look as thin but there is an opposite end of the spectrum which I don't think you'd be happy with either.

Extreme approaches are usually the wrong ones in any given situation.

If you're looking to become fat though, than don't listen to me.

Are you male or female?

im getting 3000 calories in solids a day plus 1000 in weight gainer plus 600 in liquids so i should be ok i think

That's completely ridiculous.

im male. and how is that ridiculous? i am SKIN and BONES if i DONT eat that much i will collapse haha. im 18 and have the body of a 14 year old, EVERYONE personal trainers, doctors, friends, have told me to eat as much as possible. 123 pounds is not healthy at all.

and im not looking to become "fat", i want to gain weight? what the hell else am i supposed to do than? not eat and stay super skinny and gross?

how about letting go of the cigs.. that might help with the cheeks..

yup i quit the cigs, im assuming quitting smoking than drinking lots of water should help big time

What don't you understand about not taking the extreme approach?

You obviously don't understand human physiology.

Eating that much will make you fat. Period.

You want to gain weight you say.

Your actions suggest you have no care in the world whether said weight is fat or muscle.

Without caring about that, there's a tremendous chance you won't be happy where eating all those calories given your size will get you.

But what do I know. Your friends, trainers and doctors are way way way smarter than me.

If I were in your predicament, I'd probably take the less irrational, retarded route and try the novel idea of eating in a slight surplus to ensure weight gain and couple this with the appropriate type/amount of training to ensure as much to ensure as much of said gain was in the form of muscle as possible.

You can't fast forward muscle growth by eating a ton of calories though, so you do what you want.

Not only do you have the body of a 14 year old, but you're acting like one too.

lol did your parents not love you or something? relax. if im wrong than explain why and possibily give me another solution? id do that for you. i DO eat all those calories but i ALSO work out.

My parents love me plenty, thanks. I'm not sure what they have to do with your ignorance and irrationality, but whatever.

I believe I already told you what I would recommend doing. But then again, reading comprehension is required if my words are going to mean anything to you.

so wait what are we arguing about here? i eat alot of healthy foods and work out? how could i be doing anything wrong?

lol steve i just saw your photos and jesus christ dude you know what your talking about haha

There's your ignorance again.

If you would have heeded my advice posts ago, we wouldn't still be communicating on this level. The conversation most likely would have headed in a much more productive direction for you.

And I'm not arguing. I'm not the least bit upset. I'm simply stating my thoughts on the obvious, is all.

What's wrong with eating far, far more calories than your body requires day in and out?

For the 3rd or 4th time, you'll gain fat.

Period.

Food selection (healthy) means nothing. You can get fat eating too many green vegetables if you really tried. Calories are calories. Our bodies need a certain amount to maintain and function. Eating anything above this level will lead to weight gain.

Eating huge amounts over this level will lead to a bunch of fat gain.

I'm not sure if I have to type in caps or something for you to understand what I'm saying...

But to gain weight in a way that will lead to 'image changes' that you're most likely after... eating in a slight caloric surplus matched with appropriate types/amounts of training will do the trick.

What don't you understand about that, please?

no i understand perfectly well. i figured it was ok to eat alot if i was working out? Yeah im definatly new to all this (clearly) alot of the advice ive gotten is from workers at GNC who told me "eat as much as possible" but judging by your pictures you know what your talking about. so maybe i should just do 3000 calories (including everything) and keep my work out routine.
lol have we made progress man?

er.. thanks, i was complimenting you.

so what if i dont know much about weight gaining, thats why im here. dont be such a prick.

I'm just curious why you came to a website called Weight LOSS Forum for information on gaining weight....

Here's a suggestion I sincerely hope you listen to: Read the stickies here on this forum. They're loaded with a ton of foundational advice that will be instrumental in your understanding of the basics.

alot of the advice ive gotten is from workers at GNC who told me "eat as much as possible" but

Asking GNC workers for help with regards to your diet is like me asking the Amish who solely use horse-and-buggy as a means of transportation to fix the motor in my car.

They're idiots.

judging by your pictures you know what your talking about.

I wasn't being a jackass in the above post when I said I know a lot of misinformed people who look fantastic.

I appreciate your comments about my body.

I also hope you listen to what I'm saying for future reference: Don't go around believing every guy that looks jacked. I followed that route in my early years and got nowhere. Most jacked guys are drug users who know next to nothing about anything relating to this stuff.

so maybe i should just do 3000 calories (including everything) and keep my work out routine.

Here's a very simple lesson in energy balance as it pertains to your body.

Calories are energy. We either use said energy immediately to function or we store excess for later in various forms. One of the most obvious forms is fat. Fat is simply a storage depot for excess energy you consume. It does a lot more but no need to go into details.

When looking to gain weight, an obvious question you should ask yourself would be, "How much energy do I need to consume to lose and/or gain no weight... as in break-even or maintain myself?"

Once you answer that question, you have yourself a starting point.

Maintenance intake is a very individual thing and without being hooked up to fancy equipment, it's not something you can calculate precisely. Best bet is to estimate it.

Generally speaking, maintenance intake is roughly 14-16 calories per pound for those who exercise regularly. Your maintenance intake can be assumed to be someplace around 1800-2000 calories per day.

From here, with the goal of gaining as much muscle and as little fat as possible (that is your goal, right?), you need to institute a slight caloric surplus above and beyond your maintenance.

In all cases, the best bet is to try to minimize fat gains by eating/bulking smart. Yes, you need to eat over maintenance but given the fact that you can't fast forward muscle growth, there's no need to eat waaaaaaaay over maintenance. You want to find the sweet spot where you're seeing some weight gain, but not gaining too much fat.

Read that again. And again. And now again. Let it sink in.

An aggressive surplus would be 500 calories over maintenance to start. In your case, I'd probably shoot for 250 if I'm being honest. Be consistent and every 2 weeks evaluate your progress. If it's lacking, you know you need to ramp up calories. If it's too much, you know you need to back off a bit. Finding said sweet spot is a touch & feel process.

Another major issue here is how much weight did you lose? Have you always been really skinny?
