Alright, so first off I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Dan, and I'm turning 17 in a few days (4th of June). I'm 6'1", and have a fairly large bone structure (wide shoulders, etc.) My interests are generally tech related (programming, video games, you name it) as well as music related. Real music though, none of the crap they play on the radio these days. I play drums, guitar and bass.

Okay, enough of the chit chat.

I've come to this forum seeking tips from others who have been through weight loss / are going through it right now. The reason I need these is because I've come to be quite discontent with my physical state.

As everyone knows, high school is a point where everybody gets really self conscious, etc. I've never been one to be subjected to the whole peer pressure self conscious thing that most teenagers go through, I don't feel the need to follow trends or styles etc. However there is one thing that does bother me, and that's my weight.

I don't care much what others think of me, but it's when I got to the point of being repulsed by my own body that got the ball rolling on this one. I don't feel comfortable when I see the big gut I have, or the love handles which also hang over my pants. And don't even get me started on the moobs.

I need to lose this extra weight before it becomes a more serious problem.

I suppose for anyone to help me out with this, it would require some specifics. So as I've mentioned before, I'm 6'1", male, 17 years old and I weigh just over 200 pounds.

Physical activity:
I'm asthmatic, so it's hard to get physical activities such as running going for long periods of time.

I wouldn't rate my amount of physical activity very high, it usually sums up to a few things, including running a few blocks to catch the bus (5 days a week), 30 minute walks (5 days a week) as well as drumming for about an hour (5 days a week, sometimes more). Within the past week, I have started lifting dumbbells as well as doing sit-ups.

I spend most of my free time in my room, either on my computer or playing Halo 3. I started playing competitively, which, takes up alot of time as it requires alot of practice.

Eating Habits:
Oh boy. You guys are gonna have a field day with this one. At home, I tend to be 50/50 on healthy food to non-healthy food ratio. Meals are healthy and usually balanced (greens, meat, grains, etc.) whereas snacks tend to be less healthy, because as you all know, after a long day at school (or work, etc.) it's alot easier to reach for a bag of chips than to find a more healthy alternative.

However, I love vegetables. Give me some broccoli, carrots, peppers, cauliflower, etc. and some ranch dressing and I'll make short work of it. But I hear the dressing is counterproductive to those cutting calories.

At school is a different story. I often find myself going to nearby McDonald's or a local shawarma restaurant for lunch. I usually have two of whatever I'm ordering, be it a Big Mac, Crispy Chicken or shawarma. These trips can sometimes happen up to 2-3 times a week.

Above all, my number 1 weakness has to be soft drinks. I usually have about a can of Coke every day, often more. It's not necessarily the taste, as I like pretty much every soft drink. I think maybe it's just the carbonation I like. I believe this might also be partially due to the fact I don't sleep very much, so I'm constantly taking these shots of caffeine to keep me going.

Body condition:
The areas I have problems with most are the following:
- Stomach
- Chest
- Sides
- Upper Legs (thighs, quads)

My drumming keeps my forearms and calves fairly toned, but the rest of me is pretty flabby.

I wear mostly black shirts, cause black is slimming (that's actually scientifically proven), and I'd like to be able to wear all kinds of stuff, but I look like a whale in anything else. The other day I was at a concert with some friends and went to buy a t-shirt of the band. When I asked my friends if they thought I should go with the XL size, they thought it would be too big. They were wrong.

I think overall my goal is to be comfortable with my body. I'm not expecting to look like a body builder or anything, but I'd like to be able to take my shirt off in public without being embarrassed, you know? My idol style-wise is Robert Plant (lead singer of Led Zeppelin, for those of you who didn't know, SHAME ON YOU) and maybe some day I'll be able to rock the open shirt tight jeans look too.

So, for those of you who actually read all the way to this point, I salute you, and will duly accept any sort of tips and wisdom you may have to offer me. I look forward to putting them into action and improving myself.

Once again thanks,

- Dan

At 6', 200 lbs isn't THAT overweight. I'd say you could probably lose 15 lbs or so, but you probably mostly just need to get in shape and define your body.

I would say ditch the sodas. They're completely empty calories. If you want the fizz, try a diet soda or club soda with a little juice in it instead. If you want the caffeine, try iced tea or coffee.

Also you know already that the McDonald's and the schwarma are problems. You're going to have to decide for yourself if you're willing to cut them out in favor of healthy meals. Only you can decide and act on the decision to not buy and eat 2 Big Macs or whatever it is that you're eating that day.

Other than that I'd suggest some serious weight lifting and strength building routines. It sounds like you might have access to a gym? If you do, then the possiblities are endless. If you don't there are still lots of good things you can do at home with your own bodyweight and resistance.

I'd suggest checking out a couple of books like New Rules of Lifting or Body for Life.

Also the Strong Lifts beginner fitness program is a pretty good one:

Hey hey!

Moobs.. LOL I love that saying - thought it was just an Aussie saying. And Robert Plant.. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr *hubba hubba* (in his younger days.. the Song Remains the same film  )

.. OK Back to topic...Kill the Soft Drinks for sure.. even if you are only having one coke per day.. that is an additional 140calories you really don't need.. not that it is a huge amount, but I bet the times it is more than one can.. or a 1 litre bottle etc is quite high, and you don't realise??? Same with the Junk food, time to learn to not go for those options straight away, but look at alternatives, I am sure there are healthier options near by also, perhaps even Subway if there is nothing better they have low cal options or take your own lunch instead, grilled chicken wraps with salad.

With the Cut up veggies you love to munch, that is excellent.. but yeah the Ranch dressing adds tons of calories.. try using a low cal version, and measure your portion carefully, or low/no fat yoghurt with fresh herbs instead.. or even sprinkle over a small amount of shaved or grated fresh parmesan cheese - less cals, and more taste.. not to mention a nice little protein hit!

Sounds like you could do with some weight training.. sorry not my area but there are several real experts around!

Best wishes to you for your journey.. you have taken the right first step by joining and getting your thoughts down, and asking for some help!

Congratulations for getting interested in your health. Life is just so very much better in so many ways when our bodies are in good shape.

An earlier post had the right word - "willing." Willingness to do what it takes is so much more important than "wanting to." That may seem unimportant. It's not.

To be successful long term, you only need to change one thing: everything. You need to eat differently, exercise differently, and react to life differently. I'm new to this forum, but it appears there are folks on here who have long term success at managing weight. Stick around long enough to come to know who they are, then follow their suggestions. That's what I did seven years ago to quit drinking alcohol, smoking, and to lose seventy pounds and to go from barely being able to walk up the hill at my house to running 10ks. I say that only to reinforce the idea that if you pay attention to the winners, you'll win too.

Good Luck!
- Ed
