Please help me lose weight before my proposal

Good Afternoon,

Hoping I can find a helper on this site. I am attempting to lose weight as a surprise to my girlfriend (hopefully fiancé soon) whom will be leaving for Japan in August until June 2012. During this time I would like to lose about 40 lbs minimum. I’m 5’10, 240 lbs, 25 years old, and have a hard time keeping my breath while I run. I find I can swim or bike (I often bike for 20 mins or so a day) with moderate effort with seemingly no breathing problems. I would like to run in order to lose this weight – it seems in my research that running is more efficient for weight loss than biking. Would someone with more experience please advise: If I were to keep running, would breathing become easier, or is this a problem I’ll need an inhaler to solve? I have no family history of Asthma or any other repertory illness, and I do not smoke.

Also, can anyone recommend a workout or diet that is effective and easy to start on? The end goal is weight loss, as well as muscle tone and definition that’s visible without flexing. I’m not trying to tear a phonebook in half, I just want to be a bit more eye-candyish.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Hi, and welcome to the forum :)

Have you considered calorie counting? It's an old one, but it's supposed to be based on the science of weight loss/ gain, and I find it quite easy. I can eat what I want, when I want, as long as the numbers add up. I've lost 7kg in two months (15.4lb/ just over a stone), which given I have health problems which predispose me to obesity, isn't too bad going.

You would really need to consult a doctor in regards to the breathing as I'm sure there are few people on here qualified to actually inform you of that and even if there were they would need to see you physically to make an accurate judgement.

Generally speaking however the more that you run the easier it will be to breathe while you run. I used to mess myself up when I was younger by trying to hold my breath while running (crazy I know right?) not that when I breathe it gets any better. I have asthma and don't take a puffer but when I was working out and doing cardio it got easier to breathe the more I did it until it was just my lack of stamina that was holding me back. I have a friend who has asthma and has to take a puffer every day or he can't do anything so that is really up for the doctors to say IMO.

For the weight training, you will need to work hard for it (luckily weight lifting burns Calories too :D ) . I would suggest looking up "starting strength' routine. It's designed to make you stronger faster or if you want to get bigger (muscle wise obviously) I think there is a routine out there called allpro 2x8 full body or something like that. There is no worried of the getting massive in a short amount of time especially when you are trying to lose weight because in theory you will be cutting back calories and even if you weren't it takes YEARS for big (muscle) people to get that way and you will notice how big you are getting LONG before it is too late.

I know that seems obvious but some people don't understand. They are afraid if they lift too hard that in a month they will be Arnold and that isn't what they want so they cut back on lifting weighs as much or as hard.

One thing I would suggest doing with whatever diet you choose is record everything. Not just what you eat but how you feel after you eat it and an hour after you eat it. If you feel sluggish or tired stay away from that, if he eat something and feel wired and energetic you'll want to keep with that. It will not only help you with whatever exercise program you decide to take but in your everyday life. It sometimes takes eating something a few times to notice the trend which is why I would suggest writing it down.

Anyhow; welcome to the site and I hope that you reach all of your goals; weight loss, muscle tone, and of course...with your gf :D
