Please forgive my ignorance

I've never been a stranger to the weight room but it is now that I am starting to understand the physics behind it and trying the how and why of weightlifting.

Here's my dilemma. I have read that resistance training is necessary for fat loss as well as building muscle.

In order to build muscle, you have to have a calorie surplus and to lose fat you have to have a calorie deficit.

My main goal is to lose body fat but gain some size in my chest and shoulders. I am creating the calorie deficit with diet and exercise. But I am just spinning my wheels with the wieghtlifting?
Am I correct in assuming that I can't get muscle growth because I am creating a calorie deficit to lose weight?
Is there a way to do both simultaneously?

Again, please forgive my ignorance, but I am in a state of confusion. Is there way to do both

its possible for newbies especially overweight ones to gain muscle while losing fat,but as stated above not for most:bncry:

you will get stronger from weight training, and you're body will learn to activate more monitor units (you're body will learn how to use more of a muscle when training it) this will help later if you want to get big. So weight training is never wasted.

if you just started working out, you CAN do both at the same time, these are called "beginners gains" but yes, generally you cannot do both at the same time. I would suggest bulking first, get that muscle, then burn off the fat. I would say this becuase when you have more muscle tissue, it is easier to burn off the fat.
