Plateaus?

Yes, I hit one for about 3 weeks. I stopped all exercise and ate at maintenance for a week. It was a GREAT week, lol. But the next week I started back losing.

That said, I think it's going to be different for everyone.

So you didn't gain weight during that one week at all? That's what I'm nervous about!

No I didn't gain. As long as you're tracking calories and have a good idea of what you're intake should be, maintenance should be exactly that.

I wouldn't have cared if I did gain a lb or 2 to be honest, as long as it started me losing again. Sometimes you just have to shake things up. A week did it for me, for others it may take longer, every body is different and a go-zillion variables there to consider.

Plateaus...

Hi Becky23,

I got through my plateau by adding "dumb bell and ab exercises" to my exercise program. I hit the gym about 3 times a week and go for walks on the days I am not at the gym.

Here is an interesting article.

It is my opinion that plateaus are like colds. If you have a cold and you take a decongestant, drink plenty of liquids, and get lots of rest, your cold will go away within two weeks. Whereas if you do nothing at all, it may last 14 days.

Everybody has a pet theory of how to get past a plateau. Somebody will try something, they start losing weight again, then whatever it was they tried becomes their secret weapon for plateaus. I think it's a case of post hoc, ergo propter hoc.

I never thought about plateaus this way before, but I really like it.

Yeah, but remember, Dumbo's feather made him feel better! :D

Plus there actually have been studies with 'starvation' level diets that eating back at maintenance can actually cause a woosh. Even if it's just for mental health, I think having a reasonable 'free' meal periodically is a good thing :D

I see what you did there. And I like it.

Had a five week plateau. Threw in a few days where I had big bowls of pasta and another where I devoured a whole pizza (I never went more than a few hundred calories above maintenance though, I had maybe a measly 600 calorie surplus for all days I took off combined). Woke up one day and I was 149 (from 151) then the next day I was 148, then the next day I was 147, it was magical!

Something important to note though is that the body isn't THAT fast when it comes to tracking everything going in and out of your body. This is partly why people who go off diets for a little while keep losing weight for a bit, and also why it may take a few days for a 'whoosh' or whatever to take effect because your body doesn't fully register that it's getting more food.
