Pilates and weight training?

Hello. I found this forum when I was searching for some answers and was hoping maybe someone here could help. OK...I started doing Pilates again (I had stopped for about 9 months) and I also go to the gym three times a week. I started Pilates again because I know it worked a little bit when I did use it. The reason I want to start again is because I want to slim down my thighs. My question is...since I started Pilates again, should I stop exercising my legs at the gym? Thanks for any help!

Short Answer: No.

I refer to pilates as a holistic fitness program. Pilates challenges your body and your mind. The challenge Pilates presents to your body is quite different from the challenge traditional weight training presents.

Personally: I practice Pilates and Yoga on my non - weight training days. I typically weight train Sun/Tues/Thurs, participate in either Pilates or Yoga at least once a week. You'll be just fine doing both.

Thanks for the answer. However, I have been doing things a little differently. I have been doing Pilates in the morning on the days that I go to the gym. I go to the gym on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and then do cardio (bicycle) the other days. The reason I do Pilates on the same day is because I thought you were supposed to have a day of rest after strength training. Is that right? My routine now fits my schedule the best, but should I change it?

Unless you're working really hard and sweating a lot during the Pilates, it's not going to "slim down your thighs." If you want to lose body fat, you have to do a combination of cardio and a clean diet. Pilates usually isn't enough cardio, and unfortunately, you can't spot reduce.

I would say keep up with weight training your legs as it will build muscle and muscle burns more calories, resulting in a faster metabolism.
