Perimeter of the grocery store

Awhile back I heard a very healthy thing to do is to only eat the foods on the perimeter of the grocery store. This avoids all the processed foods that are in the isles. I'm considering putting this into practice even though it will take a bit more effort in terms of preparation.

So, my questions is has anyone else ever tried this?

What are your thoughts?

That doesn't work here in Spain. The fruit and veg are usually in the middle of the store here and the store I shop at most often have all the cakes and sweet stuff up one side of the store.
I agree that avoiding processed foods is the way to go wherever they are found on the shelves. I had so much more energy as soon as I started to cut out processed foods and my food cravings virtually vanished to a point where I couldn't even make myself eat some of the things that I used to crave.

Once I started focusing on eating healthier foods, i naturally found myself not going down the aisles as much. i go down them for a few specific items, but most of my foods come from the perimeter. fruits, veggies, fresh fish and meat, dairy... etc. it seems right to me :)

I get what you mean. I used to spend a fair bit of time in the supermarket and come out with really unhealthy stuff that I was craving really badly. Now I'm a lot tougher on myself. I usually make sure I have something to do or somewhere to be later so that I'm in and out of the supermarket quickly. That way I come out only with what I actually need because I've only been down 3 or 4 aisles.
