A little background:

I was always a very active kid and in middle school and high school I competed in cross country running and nordic skiing. Well after high school I go to college and I don't exercise as much. The first year I actually lost some weight though because I was very depressed and also I was trying to be a vegetarian so I didn't really eat much. The second year was okay too because even though I was living in the dorm I was pretty good about exercising and choosing healthy food.

This last year (senior year) was the biggest problem. I moved into an apartment- my roommate had been living here for a couple of years. The main problem I had was the kitchen. She kept the cat litter box in the kitchen! It was disgusting- I couldn't even go in there to make a quick sandwich or get a glass of milk without smelling cat urine or feces (she has the "all natural" litter which doesn't have odor absorbing chemicals in it) and losing my appetite. Her friend was over once and mentioned the problem and she got super defensive about it and didn't even take his advice on putting baking soda in the litter box. So I didn't eat at home. And then when I'd be out doing errands, going to class, at work, I'd get hungry and buy food from restaurants or gas stations. Fast forward a year and I've gained 20 lbs and lost quite a bit of money doing this.

Exercise? I don't get a ton of "formal" exercise but living in downtown BTV I do walk everywhere- to class, work, stores, etc. Also I work at a dog daycare so I'm not sitting at a desk 8 hours a day, I'm actually standing, walking around, cleaning kennels, etc. It just hasn't been enough.

Now that it's warmer out I'm doing more hiking and I can't wait until it gets warm enough to swim as well. I'm also getting my bike fixed currently so I can start biking again. Those are my main forms of exercise. I do have asthma which has continued to get worse so strenuous activity such as running will usually result in an attack, but I want to see if I can slowly build up to running.

But anyways, I've noticed myself gaining weight and it's gotten to the point my boyfriend has noticed as well. We made a deal that if I ate healthier he would stop smoking (he's not addicted, he maybe smokes once a week or so but I'd like him to stop completely). We're moving in together next week (WITH NO CATS :D ) and he's really good at cooking so he's going to help me make healthier meals and try new things. I'm a really picky eater and I'm also autistic so certain textures and some flavors really turn me off of food- I've never liked the crunchy vegetable texture for example- but I'm gonna try.

I've never had a problem with my weight before in my life and I'm not really sure how to diet so I'm open to advice! I'm hoping what I've planned so far about eating healthier and getting more exercise is a good start though. I also have no idea how long it takes to lose weight. I would think it takes a year or so? I know this isn't something I can do in a few weeks.

Statistics:

Height- around 5'7", 5'8"
Weight- 164.4 lbs
Desired Weight- 145 lbs

Now what? I might not post for a week or so since I'll be busy with moving and I'm not really going to focus on this until after I move.

Hiya! Welcome to the forum! I only joined about a month ago myself and have to say everyone is super nice! I have cats myself and one of their litter trays is in the kitchen... I also use natural litter, but our kitchen never smells like that... Maybe your roomate didn't change it often enough or something...

In any case! Good luck with the weightloss!

Hi PJ & welcome to the forum. I don't know how you lasted that long sharing an apartment with kitty litter in the kitchen. That really grossed me out! That is so unhygienic & I am not even thingy about hygiene. No wonder you ate out! *shudder*
Moving in with your bf can be a great time to start a new lifestyle. Eating healthy & exercising will do it. Eat fresh fruit & veg, lean meat, especially fish & chicken, drink 2 litres of water a day, cut down fried food & processed food & before you know it the weight will start dropping off. Don't be in a hurry though. If you lose weight at a slow & steady rate by changing your lifestyle you are more likely to stay that way. Being healthy is the most important thing.
Once again a big welcome! Cheers, Cate

Thanks everyone! I finally moved into my new apartment and it's beautiful and clean and I've been able to cook real food and start trying new things! Last night I ate fajitas with peppers and onions in them which is a reallyyyyy big deal for me (I still think onions are gross though :( ).

Also I got my bike fixed and have started biking to work and appointments. Good for my health, good for the environment, good for my wallet :)

Haven't weighed myself yet. I'm hoping that I've lost a pound or so since I moved in.

Excellent news PJ. New apartment, being able to cook & your bike fixed. Life is looking up!
