Pain on the outside of my knee

I got some new running shoes and started experiencing pain on the outer side of my left knee- I think it is tendon pain because it radiated up to my hip and down to my ankle when I would exert.

I changed back to my old shoes and the pain mostly went away (so it appears that the shoes were the culprit).

However, after an immediate significant reduction in the pain, it has sort of leveled out to a minor pain that becomes a moderate pain when I exert (and it will still radiate).

It's been three weeks.

Can anyone tell me what this is and how I can help it heal faster?

Thnx

If I had to guess, I would say IT band is the culprit. Do a google search on IT band stretches and use lots of ice.
