Pain in elbows

I've been curling 20lb dumbells for a couple of weeks and think I may have overdone it a bit. I think that maybe i didnt give my arms long enough to recover and now i have an ache in both my elbows and the joint sometimes clicks when i straighten it. Should i go on training but lightly? am i doing something wrong or is this just what happens. ps its not the 'burn'... I havnt lifted for 4 days and its still happpening, not as badly though.
thanks guys

Where in your elbows? I notice that when I lift heavy after a layoff, the bottom part of my upper arms to my elbows ache to no end. Maybe thats what your encountering?

That doesn't sound good. Joint and elbow problems aren't the "good" kind of pain; your body's warning you to stop doing what you're doing before it gets worse.

Consider whether you should be warming up better, should put triceps training first to further warm up the elbows before doing biceps, or if these things still don't help, should find another exercises that will hit the biceps without causing this.

Take a break of a week to ten days from direct bicep work, whatever's necessary to see the pain go away, then consider better warmups, doing triceps first and then going with other exercises if this isn't effective.

I'm still push ups bu those dont seem to hurt. Ill leave it for a while and see how it goes. ill let you know, thanks for the advice!

Indyrock...what are you vitals (age, sex, weight)...Joint pain can either be normal for someone in your group...normal but not healthy...or it may be something you need to check up on (bone spurs, cartilage damage...anything).

Not to down what maybe an injury, but this is fairly common when doing direct bicep movements. I'm in no way advocating just working through pain as it maybe an indication of something serious or just torn tissue from the stress of the weight.

Perhaps you should consult with a strength trainer or kinesiologist.

As a side note, my professor asked for a show of hands of those that do direct bicep work and who had had "pain" in the elbow area...not surprsing to me was that nearly all raised their hands on both issues. That's when it lead to the discussion if the pain is serious or fairly common.

No one i know has had any trouble from the use of direct bi movements. Sometimes it just the individual's reaction to a particular exercise and lack of preparation. Warmup with a couple of light/moderate sets at a slow pace, ensuring that the blood starts flowing, do tris first, and experiment with alternative exercises that will provide similar benefits without the probs.

Sometimes it's a one-time thing that never comes back after resting the area.

Only after exhausting all options you can do yourself, including rest to restore the area and experimentation, would i suggest going to a trainer or specialist.

A clicking in the joints = bad news. The only elbow pain I've ever experienced was when I performed a bad dip. Otherwise; take some time off, check your form and if all else fails have a orthopoedic surgeon check it out.

im 17 (18 in 4 wks), roughtly 160lbs, 6ft...
the pain's a lil bit better today, no clikcing either. im dtayin off the curls for 10 days to see if it helps. otherwise ill go see my doctor...

Indy:

Describe exactly what type of curl and how many you were doing. Also; what else had you done throughout the routine. The curls may have been the proverbial straw that broke the camels back, or should I say elbow.
