Pain, Fatigue and Excersise

Some of you may remember my complaint about my shoulder. I have narrowed it down to "Frozen Shoulder" and am seeing a Rheumotologist on Monday.

The pain is intense and it makes me very tired. Frozen Shoulder causes a lot of pain and is an inflamation in the joint. This causes fatigue.

I get up to work out but have trouble, and have trouble during the day.

The 'cure' for this is Physical Therapy and other managment tools. But I am having trouble losing weight because of the fatigue and I can't really lift weights the way I usually do.

Arm excersises are so difficult. I'm afraid my right arm will be more built than my left because I can barley move it. And they say movement is the best thing to help it from freezing more.

Even leg excersises are hard with weights because you have to use your arms. Tae Bo, or any dance cardio that uses arms is difficult. And it has been too cold to walk.

So now what do I do? I can do the Tae Bo and stuff with modified arms for now, but I'm really bummed I cand lift the weights properly. This is a staple to my weight loss. I fear I'll never lose. Any suggestions?

Welp, if you're wanting something similar to the physiological benefits of (anaerobic) weight training, then I'd recommend some other sort of high intensity training. Maybe do interval sprints (HIIT) on a (bi)cycle?

It's hard to recommend something without knowing what you have access to (in terms of equipment). I mean, from what I can tell, it's either HIIT cycling or HIIT running, but I wouldn't recommend the running 'cause your arms move a fair bit, and it's easy to injure yourself if you don't know what you're doing and start at a gallop.

Do you have a gym membership, and/or are you willing to purchase cardio equipment? Or already have either available? I'm assuming you do not.

Edit: But really, there's no need to be so afraid of taking a break from the weights in the short term. Regular breaks can actually improve your progress. It gives time for your slower adaptations (connective tissues and such) to catch up to your muscles. Good for... wait for it... preventing injury. XD

So, relax, sit back and let the good times roll. Often times taking a break is enough to improve results or destroy a plateau. You may suffer a little detraining, but it's not that big a deal.

No gym membership. And I don't have a bike, although I'm looking to get a stationary bike in a few weeks. I'd like to resume walking w/o weights when the weather gets warmer. But you are right, I want the anaerobic excersise. Maybe I'm just out of luck and have to wait it out.

Read my edit above, if you haven't. As I said, it's not anywhere near a big deal. I know it's hard, especially when you've been making good strength gains (I'm on a week off myself right now... not forced, well, by anything other than good sense, heh).

If you are thinking of a bike, I highly recommend the Schwinn 230 (or 231) series. I have had two of them for several years, and for a $450 bike they have been amazing. Quiet, comfortable and not one mechanical problem with either the entire time.

Maybe you should just take a break from the exercise for a little bit? At least until you see the rheumatologist on Monday. I think it would be a good idea to ask him about it, he will have experience which he can apply to your specific case and be able to tell you realistically what you can/can't, should/shouldn't be doing. In the meantime you don't want to hurt yourself. I'm really sorry you're in so much pain and hope it feels better soon.

Thanks, Monday is not that long off thank goodness. Today it doesn't hurt too bad. I did some walking for 45 min and did some kickboxing with modified arms, so as long as I can do some cardio, I'll live.

the doctor said it is either a torn ligament or tendinitous. She gave me a cortozone shot, but I don't think it helped. I had an x-ray, and if needed, I'll get a mri. So she said with PT, it should get better.

Physical therapy can sometimes feel like going several rounds with thhe Marquis de Sade - but it helps a lot long term... Hope you're on the mend soon...

Thanks. I know PT is going to feel like Hell. I have given in to take the neproxin for now. My arm feels so much better. I was miserable w/o it, I couldn't even function the pain was so bad. Oh well, sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Thanks for the advice.
