Overworking muscles.

Hello my name is Matt and I have been working out for about 2 and 1/2 months now. I took maybe a week break once in this time but it definitely didn't cause me to loose any muscles. Although when I started I kept at a routine of

Triceps/Back + abs
Biceps/Chest + abs
Legs/shoulders + abs
(repeat) (cardio on most days)

I followed this routine for the first month with hardly any breaks but then switched my workout to

Triceps/Biceps + abs and forearms
Chest/Back + abs
Shoulders/Legs + abs
(repeat) (cardio on most days)

and ever since I've been following this routine. I take breaks only when I have to ( a.k.a going to camp or working ). I would see major improvements the days I did rest, and I usually spend a solid 4-5 hrs in the gym daily but I'm lost on what days I should stop or rest on. I take protein every day and never skip out on protein, I always take it on the days I can't make it to the gym, and I don't know if this has anything to do with anything but I have taken Black Powder for the past 3 weeks pre workout. I just want a routine that will give me good results. I have a pretty high matabilism and I weigh around 155. My goal is to bulk up. Much appretiation to those that can help me.

I usually work out 4-5 hrs a day everytime I workout. It allows me to finish what I need to do without missing anything. I do my abs, not to mention 3-4 different machines/free weights for each muscle group I have that day.

*way* too much time in the gym. You need to create a more efficient routine. I can't imagine how many exercises you are doing per body part, but it seems like far too much. If you can do tons of exercises per body part, maybe you want to up the weights, and do less of them. Also more compounds.

It is totally *not* necessary to spend that much time in the gym each visit.
1 to 2 hours a day ......

If you keep up this 4-5 hour a day in the gym your going to see some negative result's I believe. This is how muscle retention occur's, i've seen it and it's not pretty. I'd suggest cutting your time in the gym drastically and possibly lift heavier to give you the bulk you want to gain. This will also cause you get soar/tired out quicker than usual.

Thanks alot, love the responses. So I should cut to 1-2 hours a day. I just want to know days I should break on as well. Or if I should go 7-8 days in a row like I've been doing .

Some people have 3 a day schedual's..Monday/Wendsday/Friday. I personally find that this ins't enough for me because I love going to the gym lol, so I go Monday to Friday and take the weekend's off. It give's you the neccessary rest that your body need's and you get some great lifting in.

I enjoy working out too, and what I do is a 3 day split so 3 days of lifting, one day cardio, three days lifting one day cardio, that way you are "taking a break" from the weights, but not just doing nothing. :)

would low weights with large reps be acceptable?

If you want to build endurance...and get more of a cardio workout than a strength/resistance workout.

It has its place in fitness...but not much in bodybuilding since it doesn't activate the muscle fibers that are capable of growing large.
