Overweight and Taken Advantage of!

Has anyone else found themselves at a department or clothing store, trying on clothes, deciding that you like the way it fits (finally you've found something that fits without the crotch sagging or the legs being too baggy or the waist being too high or too low) and then checking out the price tag, only to see that it costs over $100!!!!!

I know it takes more material to make clothes for overweight people, but I'm sick and tired of having to pay 2-3 times the price for these items than thinner people do. I once bought a shirt at Additionelle for $129.00. Something that, if I were 40lbs lighter, would cost me around $49.00. It's ridiculous.

Just because I'm overweight, it doesn't mean that I have no sense of style... and I shouldn't be penalized for being overweight by being charged ridiculous prices for clothing. Stores do this because we have no other choice but to purchase it if you want to look even somewhat fashionable. Does anyone have any comments?

As well... while we're on topic, i'm need to get a dress for Christmas - anyone have any ideas on where I could buy one? I'm pretty tall (5'11") and I wear a 16-18. I was thinking Laura Plus - I've seen some of the dresses they have in their shop windows and they look pretty nice. Any ideas?

I'm not in Canada so I'm not sure what you have up there - I get a lot of my clothes from they have nice, fashionable clothes for bigger people. They cost a bit more which really pisses me off too.

Why is that skinny girls can find cute, cheap clothes but anything cheap for big girls looks like something my grandma would turn her nose up at.. very frustrating sometimes. Good Luck!!

You two need to move to England -as far as I've seen the clothes here are the same price in any size. They certainly are from sizes 6-28 or so. (And I'm only at a 14-16!)

Yeah... the Lane Bryant in the mall here has some pretty nice looking stuff in it.
I'm not fashionable though so heh..

That is pretty messed up that prices would be jacked up that much though. Yeah more fabric is needed to make the clothes, but not THAT much to increase the price that dramatically.
I've never noticed any price increase as my waist has gotten bigger though, but then again I don't buy clothes very often. :D

Seriously, it's actually hard to find cute clothes for anyone over a size four, in my experience. I wear a six and it's still hard for me to fit into the things that are sold at thrift stores and places like that >.<

That's mean that they do that, though! I wish that I could do something about it... It's not like people who are overweight don't deserve the same treatment that more 'socially acceptable' people get :\ I know how it feels to be out of control with eating, it's not like people want to gain weight and are doing it just out of plain laziness and spite for society... It's an actual problem.

Hmm... Maybe I'll be an advocate in the future =D

man going shoppin for clothes just pi**es me off, I want to wear cute stuff too, but nooooo it ya wear a size over 16 or 18 (if yer lucky) you atomatically move into *granny grunt apparel* like i want to wear some giant flowered silk shirt, while evryone else is wearing thoes cute half jackets and embroiderd jeans..........and any place that sells cute big sizes costs ya an arm and a leg...........it does suck and i have no answers!!!! i onece tried ordering a size xxxl from this one catalog and whrn it came it was like a size medium at best:mad: well at least i vented ...........see ya STAR

it's ridiculous actually. i live in calgary, alberta (canada) and we have three stores here that cater to plus sized women: additionelle (where everything is high-waisted and sequenced - yuk!), penningtons (where 5% of the store is aimed at people below the age of 40) and Toni Plus (where the most inexpensive item is like $500!).

I've been looking through the Lane Bryant site (thanks pequin!) and they seem to have a lot more selection that's at least half-way fashionable than these other places.

I'm not the type of person who likes to wear my clothes super tight so that every roll is hanging out and it looks like you needed a shoe-horn and a bottle of grease to get into it... and i don't like wearing clothes that doesn't fit right. I think companies think that because you're overweight, you inevitably want elastic waistbands, you have a big bum (which I actually don't!) and think that floral prints are timeless and beautiful (which they are... but for 60 year olds). These companies also think that being over-weight is one dimensional and that everyone who weights 200 or 250 or 300lbs all have the same shaped body (which we all know they don't!!). I'm kinda tall (5'11") with a 34" inseam and i have a hard time finding pants and jeans long enough. it's time for the people who design size 14+ clothes to realize that not all their customers have tree-trunks for legs, booties for bums, size EE boobs and need pants that sit just under their armpits.

sorry for the ramble, it's just very VERY frustrating to walk into a store, look at every rack and not see one thing that fits me better than if i had 8 arms, 6 boobs growing out of my back and hips the size of jupiter!

okay.. that's enough complaining for one afternoon.

Oh gosh! Why does 20 Litres of fuel cost more than 5?

The more that there is in something... the more it is worth. I'm not trying to be mean... I also hate shopping for clothes... everything that I try on looks really crappy... but when I actually find something that fits well, it's around $10 more expensive than smaller sizes...

But that's life... and life is shit ;)

my jeans don't take 3 times the material as someone who wears a size 0-12, so why should they cost as much? gasoline is hardly a fair comparison - it's a consumable. the labour cost associated with making the jeans is not triple either. the fact is - companies take advantage of people who have no other choice but to buy their merchandise.

I shopped in a Penningtons in Kamloops in September...they had joined up with 2 other stores (it's a new thing). The one where I got all my new cute clothes was called mXm...the prices weren't too bad either.

It really does take time to search and find cute clothes in the women's sections of stores.

When I was in the plus sizes I would always shop at Dress Barn. They always have cute clothes.

My husbands clothes are so incredible expensive---we saved up a $1000.00 to go shopping a few years ago and we were going to split it 50/50...well his clothes were so expensive that he wound up using $700.00 of it! I was annoyed but he needed the clothes more than me.

I look forward to the day when he can walk into a Walmart and buy a pack of t-shirts for $7.77

Try see if theres a store near you- Not bad - they are small department store- I've seen there plus size section and its got some cute stuff- Daisey Fuentes has lines in all size pet. reg. and plus.

There website normally doesn't have 1/4 of the stuff in store

an interesting point.....

I recently watched a British program, though the name eludes me at the moment. Something along the lines of "#*$@ you I'm Fat" but not sure exactly. He made some pretty interesting observations and not just about clothes. Restaurants, phone booths, toilets, turnstyles into the subway, public transportation, etc, all CLEARLY not designed with us in mind... But on clothes, this is what he found:

In England right now, the population is sitting at a whopping 65% overweight. In 5 years it will be 70%. Yet when it comes to clothing and shopping, the market caters to the 35% of "normal" sized people. So not only do larger sized folks have to pay more, but we have way less choice. I know this is also the case in Canada, where truly big folks have a hard time buying anything in their size. (I will hate boot cut jeans for the rest of my life, since for the first 20 years that is ALL I could wear..) He sent a couple girls, not obese or overly big by any means to go shopping and see if they could find anything above size 12. In the 2 stores they found that even offered their sizes at all, the selection was poor and the prices unreasonable. Once again, all over a couple extra inches of material which could in no way justify the dramatic increase in price.

As for the cost itself, well, they kind of have us by the short and curlies. Since there is so much competition in smaller and more fashionable clothes, they can charge us bigger ones whatever they want! We have so few choices, we simply must pay or sacrifice any personal sense of style at all.

In my mind this is a crime, plain and simple. They are taking advantage of a large percentage of the population and treating us unfairly. But, until the fashion industry recognizes that not every "hot bod" is anorexicly thin, not a hell of a lot we can do about it except get sweating.

As for that tv special (maybe movie) has anyone seen it or know the proper name? It was very well done and shows the scarier parts of our western society and the serious hazzards we will be dealing with in the future if we dont do something about it.

Ithink it was eleanor roosevelt who was quoted as saying - people can't take advantage of you without your permission...

Things have improved in recent years - especially where women are concerned - years ago -Lane Bryant was a purveyor of polyester stretch pants and mumus and bras with steel playing with 6 hooks up the back -Once they were aquired by The Limited - their stores started to get a little style,,, some of the items in the stores i still roll my eyes and say - just because they make it in your size, doesnt mean you should wear it -but at least younger girls dont have to shop in the pretty plus polyester secion og heir local Sears store.

there are also other stores that carry plus sizes for women - and the stores don't bear the stigma of having to shop in them. Are there enough stores? nope but should every store cater to every size? It's up to the store what they carry...

One of my goals is to be able to wear a bra from victoria's secret - I've always been top heavy so this might or might not happen - but it doesn't stop me from trying... I'm not going to let it bother me that VS doesn't carry largerthan a 38D and those are few and far between... the daily list of things I choose to care about is really entirely too long as it is - as long as i have clothes that fit.. and match -and make me look presentable when I'm meeting ith higher ups - i'm ok.

super thin is what's big now (OK bad pun) size 0 is available in most stores (years ago, you'd have to shop a a specialty shop to get a size that small) I'm sure that market will change.. again.. it always does.
