can overtraining lead to a weakened immune system and as a result illness?
i worked out today when i think i shouldnt have and now im exhausted and have a temperature.

You are probably exhausted because your body uis fighting off something, hence the fever. Not because you worked out. Can it weaken your immune system? yes, But having a temperature that soon after working out is not usually a sign. Actually unless your body has been overworked the exercise can boost your immune system.

you shouldnt train if you are feverish, your body is already fighting the fever so making it work harder is only going to make you worse.

overtraining can lead to tiredness etc because it weakens your CNS (central nervous system) but most people dont overtrain they undereat or dont rest enough.

I can't see how/why the OP thinks he is overtrained, simply because of working out when he should have had a rest day and then got a temperature. Your performance in the gym can be compromised if you work out when you have a cold for example but that is not overtraining.

To answer the OP, You are NOT overtraining. Most likely you are sick from catching a bug or virus from someone.

In general though, you can overtrain and the syntomps of that are like having a flu. Overtraining does not occur in most recreational gym person but rather endurance professional training. It takes a lot and long duration training over months to start feeling overtraining side-effects: can't sleep, soreness, fever, (think flu like) etc...

I'd suggest that you rest up and drink lots of OJ to fight the cold/flu and then go back into the gym.

Overtraining can weaken the immune system if you have an immune system problem! You don't have to give me your medical history, but keep in mind if you've had any major illnesses, diseases, or conditions, your immune system may not bounce back as quickly as it used to. I've had a few different viral illnesses, and if I work out too intensely, I will be sick with a fever, swollen glands, and ulcerated throat within 24-48 hours. Never fails.

i overtrained once (actually did) but that was over a month of intense exercise and the effects took their time showing themselves, now I have a least one rest day a week and take one when I want one, thats the sign of a clever athlete, sticking to your schdule but if it isn't working then changing it and adapting it to suit yourself better

jsut read it over, btw Im not trying to sound like a mug 'clever athlete' but thats what my coach and pe teacher say, and one played for pro rugby teams in his hay day

+1 Tenpercent.

However, you may be overtrained. I never feared overtraining, and it happened to me. Course, I had to try to hit new 1RM pr's every day...

And yes, I had constant immune system depression. I was sick more times in that period of several months-year than I have ever been in my life.
