OVERTRAINING?! (all about it)

so, how do you really know your overtraining?

how do you overtrain? signs? symptoms?

i just wanna know what not to do.. or maybe i am overtraining unknowingly already...

overtraining is very hard to do, some might even say it is impossible. That doesn't mean you should do anything you want to, the point is that if you try, your body will stop you before you reach overtraining.

Some signs to look for:
depression, mood swings in general.
not motivated to work out
strength decreasing.

Having those doesn't mean you are overtraining, they are simply signs that you are doing a bit too much and need a rest.
Overtraining is pretty serious, it's like being sick. You won't get there unless you are very serious and ignore some pretty clear signs your body sends you.

BTW. i spend 1 hour 45 minutes in the gym, 3 times a week..

(thats inclusive of around 10 cardio to warm up and 5 minutes stretching before and after)

i do legs, shoulder and back AND Chest, bis n tris and abs in alternating days..

too much? what do you guys think?

No where near enough to overtrain.

While still laying in bed take your pulse rate as soon as you wake up, if you find big variences in HR then you may be overtraining but it is very unlikely with that activity level.

for me, one of the signs is sleep struggles. When I am in the zone, like I am right now I know it, and I will hold this (3-4 hours per day- I am trainign for ironman) until my sleep gives me issues. Up an ddown, all night, head running a mile a minute, that sort of stuff.

Over"training" is not impossible tho Kark-meister, not at all... Ironmen are watching each other all the time, asking about sleep, and we call it "recovery" no rest. But recovery is an 11 min mile. We train to recover.

to the OP- you are probably new to training and you fel good about yourself compared to the "public." BUT- coming and telling us- at THIS website, is not the same. WE ARE ALL BUSTING OUR BUTTS BRO! just jon the group.

My own understanding of overtraining is that it is not giving the muscles time to recover, so if you hit chest today do something else the next day. On the other hand going for hours and hours on one day is also counterproductive.

depends on the discipline and what you are training

fast and hard rules are not "the rule" in the athletic fitness realm

It's important to make a distinction between overreaching and overtraining.

To extend this, adaptation generally goes as follows:

Step 1 ) The application of training stress.

Step 2) Muscles and other tissues conform their composition to resist the stressor more effectively.

Option Step 3) Muscles et al are not able to adapt due to receiving insufficient rest for recovery and supercompensation to occur.

In the short term (days or weeks), the inclusion of step 3 is called "overreaching". In the long term (months), it is known as "overtraining".

ive always been afraid of overtraining and people have told me that i am, just wanna kno what you guys think I do cardio everyday recently Ive been doin 2 some 2 a days but thats just cuz i feel like rollerblading while its nice. I lift 4 days a week with a split routine, for a couple of weeks I took one day off but had trouble sleeping that night and it seemed like it messed with my schedule for a couple days after so i stopped, anybody else ever experienced this!!! oh also, sometimes my legs are a bit tired but by the time i warm up there never tired

yes, the only problem I have now is with the 2 a days i cant eat enough to keep up. ie i have one of those wrist bands that tells u how many calories you burn and it told me i burned about 2100cals 1 on monday and tuesday but I was only able to consume about 2800 cals each day however I cought up a little bit yesterday. This what my diet usually consists of you can see I feel like im eating alot
