Over 40, mother of 8...

At 43 (almost 44) y/o and having given birth to eight kids, it's important to me to try and stay in (decent) shape, also help set a good example for my kids (especially the 4 girls). My weight is where I'd like it (~120#), just working on getting some more definition now. I've got a trainer to help with the strength training and diet and I follow a pretty stringent workout routine as far as cardio goes (daily - hey, with this many kids, I need the break ;) ).

Right now I'm concentrating on getting a little cut and training for a few 5K races I want to run in the next few month's.

This pic was taken about 3 month's ago, I've made some progress since then.

wow.. fabulous

Lay off the running... Feeds your muscular imbalances. You are a back injury waiting to happen if you haven't had trouble already. Start lunging yesterday.

Also don't leave out the hammies. RDLs, K-bell swings, single leg bridging, etc.

Not trying to tear you down. You look good, especially for having birthed 8 rug rats! Just giving you feedback on where I would focus next.

Keep up the hard work.

Your lower back is in danger. You need glutes and hams. They protect the lower back proprioceptively. If they are absent in the kinematic sequence, your back picks up the slack, and it is not designed to work on it's own. You're glutes look a little weak, which means that they may not be able to pull their share of the workload. Have you ever had lower back trouble?

Have you ever had lower back trouble?

Actually, I've had back problems since I was 19 y/o, I was in a car accident and broke the three lower vertebrae on the right side. I also broke both ankles and tore cartilage in my right knee (had it scoped to remove the torn pieces).

I have been working with my trainer on strengthening my lower half and back, I think my glutes and hams are stronger than they may appear. I've had less back problems these past 5+ month's than I've had in years.

I'm also careful when I run, aside from using a well cushioned shoe, I pay attention to my form and stride. I also work with my brother on my running, he's a marathon runner/trainer/coach and is well aware of my previous injuries.

I'm not going to stop running, JP. Not just because I love it, but because it's something they (the docs) told me I "wouldn't" be able to do. I may not be the fastest runner, I'll never win a race or set any records, but I always finish. ;)

This is a classic "which came first... chicken or the egg" scenario.

Injuries can effect lower segments as well, especially if you don't properly rehab them. To prevent you from having to type up your whole routine, do you have a training log you can link me to?

You live in Cali... I know a MotionDNA practicioner there who can do a gait analysis on you and tell you PRECISELY where your imbalances are. It is a pretty cool test... You'll get hooked up to a bunch of sensors and have your motion tested, and your movement will be measured to a thousandth of a degree and a thousandth of a second. It's not cheap. The guy I know there is probably the top biomechanics expert in the country, and he charges about $350 for a consultation, but the results are absolutely worth it.

......

keep it up kiddo! you look amazing!!! I bet you get looks from guys of all ages....that has to make you feel good huh?
