Sport Organic Foods

Sport Fitness
Last week I went to one our the local organic food markets here. I was stunned at some of the prices. I had heard that organics are more expensive than conventional foods, but I never thought that they would be 15 - 20% higher.

I ended up walking out without buying anything. Not so much because I didn't have the money, but because I just couldn't see myself spending that much more just to eat pesticide-free foods. Maybe I'm missing something, or just being cheap...:D

So what do you think? Are organics worth the price in your opinion?

I only buy organic fruit and vegg, eggs and some meat.
everything else is normal shop stuff.

It tastes nicer and its good to know your not harming the world.

I wouldnt say its 20% more. maybe 10%

organic

I guess it might have to do with the area and the stores. But I saw some produce that were easily 15% more than what we usually buy at our local WinDixie supermarket.

The organic produce where I live is highly expensive compared to non-organic.

I find it funny that you can go to Mcdonalds and get a burger for $1 yet when you want to buy a organic chicken breast, it costs $4.25 per/lb.

God Bless America....

try trader joes if theres any near ya they have good prices and mostly key word mostly organic foods. or at least foods without all the preservatives, artifical growth hormones, etc, whole foods is good too but a little more expensive. i go there for the protein drinks i dont like the artifical flavors in GNC's.

The grocery store I shop at has bananas (Dole I think) for 49 cents a pound - the organics (Dole again) are 69 cents. Maybe not a big difference in price but it's a heck of a markup.

I struggle enough eating right and affording things, let alone getting organic...

Although we have Wild Oats and Trader Joes, and they have good breads and pastas...it's fun to treat myself on occasion just for the hell of it...

Good info. I'll probably share some of it on my podcast next week. Maybe do some kind of survey to see what others think. Thanks...:)

Wow, I would be jumping for joy if organics were only 20% more than regular.

Regular milk $3.25, organic $5.29. That's about 60% more.
Regular ol' peanut butter (name brand) about 2$ish, organic is over $4
ketchup (cheap as hell) - organic - about $3 for a small bottle
Fruits are at least double, and organic meat isn't even available in my town.

So, sure, I would love to have the luxury of going all organic, but when you have a family of 4, paying almost twice as much (or more) is just not happening.

i know this seems proably pointless to argue wit butat wholfoods they have the "365" brand which is still preservative free, organic, or whateva ya wanna call itbut at a much cheaper price so wholefoods is not a place for just rich liberal hippies to afford. they created the 365 brand for a reason because they want you to shop their despite your economic level

There are some who argue that if the value of the environmental and health costs were actually included in the price of conventional foods, they would actually be more expensive than their organic counterparts.

A great read about where our food comes from is Michael Pollen's The Omnivore's Dilemma. I loved this book - very informative and entertaining. He tries to trace where our food comes from with a first person journalistic narrative. I'll leave out the details here, because there are a ton of raving reviews out there.

95%* of the food that I eat is Organic and i would not have it any other way  Can you truly place a price on your life"health"? besides typically the price difference between buying organic and non organic is only about 30Bucks total after checkout "at least in my case"

Think of it this way
take a second and think about all the bad stuff in food now days.....then once you have thought about it question how many of those items that are bad are man made? or added to the food by man?

now Organic food cannot be certified if it contains any of the ingredients you are thinking of ;)

*the other 5% comes from eating out and such
