Oprah - wow

I just saw Oprah on TV yesterday, I can't believ how fantastic she looks for a 52 year old. Looks like her new trainer has helped her reach her goal weight.

I don't watch TV, but I do look at the magazine covers as I pass through the check-out lane. I have a theory about Oprah. I think she may intentionally yo-yo her weight in order to cause better identification with her key demographic. Just a theory, but I have to believe someone with access to the kind of resources she has could be in any condition she chooses. I wonder if she's not just acting in the best interest of her sponsors and ratings.

Common!:) Do you really think that mainteining weight can be achieved only by having financial resources? Do you really think that weight problem is only about food? Oprah herself will tell you No, it is NEVER about food. It is always about what is in your head, in your past and how you deal with issues you have. According to you, all rich people should be slim/ healthy/not drug addicted? alcohol free (list can go on) simply because they have money. I do not agree at all. I think in Oprah's case the older she gets, the better she knows herself. She is like a good wine gets better with age.

She does look absolutely amazing. It is wonderful to see when inside beauty equals outside.:)

As soon as I hit the "submit reply" button I had the thought that somebody could get upset about me saying anything the least bit negative about Oprah. And I regretted it almost instantly. As I said, it was just a theory, and I don't want to argue with anyone about it. I have very little knowledge of the woman except that she is the master of a vast media empire and goes well beyond the desciption of "rich".
I do not believe that only the rich have the resources to be fit. I've been to both extremes myself and am only a working man. My impression is she is a person that knows what she wants and does what she needs to do to reach her objective. My observation is that she seems to be alternately fit, then overweight.
As you say, it could all be perfectly true. It could be a terrible struggle for her. But if so, it could be to her financial advantage, as the many people who also struggle will feel a kinship with her and watch her program and are more likely to trust her and patronize her sponsors.
But it's only my opinion and I am admittedly very cynical about celebrities and mass media in general.

this is interesting. i don't watch oprah b/c i'm at work mostly. i think it probably is a struggle for her, but i do also think that she does have more than enough resources to help her do whatever she wants. say, if she wants a trainer - she can definitely get the best...me, my trainer is FitTV and whatever other motivation i can find that i don't have to pay extra for..i cook my own food, struggle with making it low-fat, etc...whereas, those would perks for oprah..she's got that all taken care of...but yeah..who knows. good for her if she lost weight. i applaud anyone who does it healthfully.

huh, never considerd that angel!!!! It makes sense, i like her cuz i can relate to her and her struggles with weight.........as well as a billion other overweight chicks............like old Carnie Wilson.......when she was skinny i quit watching her............untill she was on celebrity fit club and i was like "oh shes fat again???" yeah that makes a good strategy , but O is still cool!!!!

I still amazes me that people think "well if I had what she had then I would be thin" Its all about whats in the head.

Of course her weight is a struggle for her. She's been up and down for years, and now she's been maintaining her weight at a weight that's good for her, instead of trying to be a size 2. It's not anything she does on purpose, and her money has nothing to do with it as karol said. Being rich doesn't stop you from being human.

And yeah, I agree she looks INCREDIBLE. Very beautiful woman.

That is an interesting theory about Oprah. As much as we all like to feel like we know her and who she is, we have to admit that we don't. We don't know her at all. All we know is the personality she portrays in public. Celebrities and the image they portray are pretty much a combination of who they are naturally and who their publicists, makeup artists, agents, so on and so forth create for the target audience. Take Martha Stewart - she's actually a loony toon, and Eddie Murphy is said to be one of the most dull boring people you could meet in real life.

So, if we admit that Oprah is a celebrity and therefore subject to the same image-creating they all are subject to, then it is possible. I'm not making accusations, just saying that celebrities do go to vast lengths to maintain their audience, and packing on a few pounds to make her more relatable to her female audience isn't really all that crazy.

People tend to think of her as somehow special and different, as if all she does is truly just out of the kindness of her heart. But, it is her job to get on that stage and nod in her understanding way with a couple of tears, and hug the guests, donate money appropriately, and so on. That is her image - the "I know how you feel" talk show host - and struggling with weight goes right along with it. So, while I'm not accusing, it does make sense. As much as she is practically worshipped among housewives everywhere, she is a media created celebrity, just like the rest of them.

Please don't shoot me.

her figure looks good for her age but to be truthful, due credit must also go to her make-up artist.

I have to agree. Her figure looks a lot better than it used to, but she's also wearing a lot more makeup now. Still, grats to her for working on her body shape and getting the results she was looking for.

The make up on her face has nothing to do with the shape of her body. Her face is obviously showing signs of aging and she's trying to cover that up. I don't wear make up, but I can't knock her for it, though in my opinion she looks better without quite so much.

As far as it being her job, there a lots of talk show hosts and they don't do the things that she does. She has chosen to do these things for people and use her show as a platform. No, I don't know her but I don't think its fair to say it's her job. Does Ellen, David Letterman or any of the ladies on The View do these types of things with their stardom? Donahue was THE MAN and he didn't use his platform to do these things.

And let's be realistic, yea she does pay people to cook her food and train her but if she wants a box of candy bars who's going to tell her she can't have them? No one can MAKE her, or any of us for that matter, do or not do anything. She's human and she's been through far more than I have in my life, the woman has legitimate "issues" that can be the reason for her continued struggles. And just like the rest of us, when things go wrong in life she has admitted to turning to food. Just because she's megarich, doesn't mean things don't go wrong in her life...whether its an ill relative/friend or a relationship issue. She's a star but she's still human with problems too, money doesn't negate those things.

I can't say she is or isn't doing this on purpose but I choose to believe not. I need to worry about my own life and health. If she is doing it on purpose she's not hurting anyone but herself. She helps hundreds of thousands if not millions of people in some form everyday, directly or indirectly and that's not including all those she inspires to take on a more healthy life. Overall, it's far more helpful to her viewers than to her, she'll never spend all that money, but if she is doing it on purpose look at the lives she has literally saved by inspiring them to loose weight and/or helping them identify the reason they gained it in the first place. They get to live longer, more happy lives...and not to be corny but another day with my daughter is worth FAR more than any amount of money that she could have.

All things considered, does it matter?

1. No, not all of them do, although Montel is pretty good at it. What I meant was, it is part of her image to do those things. Stars are sometimes like politicians in those ways. They have this big staff of people who pretty much control many of their public actions to manipulate public response. Basically their platform, which pet causes they have and all that.

2. You are totally right on that one. In fact, I would think money could make it worse.

3. Does it matter? No, not really. Some people, while appreciating the good they do, accept it for what it is - created image, while others eat it up and ask for seconds - this is pretty much where the term "sheeple" came from.

I just can't help myself..I must open my big mouth. The mega-rich have no excuse for not being skinny, its called plastic surgery. HAHAHAHA :D

plastic surgery doesnt stop you shoveling food into your mouth.

and if i recall correctly oprah has had some plastic surgery done, but i think mostly nips and tucks on the face etc for wrinkles.

I have a subscription to her magazine. While she was losing the weight, you could definitely see the difference in the cover shots. The last few issues, she looks absolutely fantastic. You can tell she works hard to maintain. I think she's a beautiful person inside and out.

Oprah looks goods in her mag because of all the air brushing and lighting.
She has stated that she has never had plastic surgery and only has the weight struggles.
And the other reason she probably looks good for her age is because she is dark skinned, dark skinned people age well because of the pigmentation.

I'm with PAPrincess72 who cares she is beautiful inside and out.
And she has shared her weightloss ups & downs with everyone in the world and that is what we can identify with.

I could believe that she goes up and down in her weight...to make her more appealing to the public...make her more real to us...showing us that she is one of us that has to struggle also.....I am in the minority...I don't get why she is so great...

You can say she gives so much....She can afford to.

I am sorry if I offended anyone...but to me she is fake.
